  1. Over the last 2 months whenever I boot up and connect to the internet, within a half hour or less, I'm disconnected and have to reconnect again. This can go on all day! I contacted my ISP and they suggested testing the phone line connection, by removing the front plate and connecting direct, which I did to no effect. I also renewed the filters, with no success. I have a Speedtouch modem. My PC is situated in another room away from the main phone line connection. I use a dsl extension cable. It runs under the carpet, but we dont walk over the cable. I'm wondering if the cable might have worn somewhere in its length. I'd really appreciate any advice, please.
  2. ....to those members who gave me advice on 2 subjects: 'Which ports?' and 'Lost Files' . I had to go away for several months and have just returned. I thank you all for your for help and advice.
  3. So sorry I havent replied before, I've had to go away for a time. I have a HP Photosmart C 3180. It will work, but takes a time to start when I've clicked on 'Print'. So I wondered which of the usb ports was 'usb 2', which is what the pop-up says.
  4. Browser sooo slow! I have a Packard Bell PC with Win 2000 xp. It is 5 years old. I use Mozilla Firefox browser and when I first installed it, it worked quickly for a couple of years. Now it can take anything up to 4 minutes to open. I've tried removing programmes that I dont need, I clean the hard drive and defrag regularly. Its okay for a day or two, then back to square one. I have Norton internet security. Is it my PC's age or what? Any suggestions gratefully received. Thanks.
  5. Hi members I have been using Imtoo dvd burning software to burn dvds to play on my dvd player. I have the updated version now and while it will burn the disc, I can no longer play it on my dvd player! Can anyone tell me why or recommend different burner software that will do this, please?
  6. Hi, When I use my printer, a message pops up onscreen telling me that the printer will work faster if connected through a different port. Can anyone tell me which port I should use and where it is among the others on my PC? I have 4 at the rear of the computer and 2 at the front. Its a Packard Bell. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks Gill
  7. Earlier this year, I had a problem with my PC. So, I called PC World, with whom I have a repair contract...after some discussion with the tech fella on the phone, he suggested that I perform a partial recovery process. He assured me that a partial recovery would not lose any saved files...this message also appeared onscreen when I accessed the recovery mode. Well, I followed his instructions to the letter and......lost all my photographs!! They were saved in 'My Documents'. (I've learned the lesson and now store them at a web storage album.) I was wondering if there is any way I could regain those files and, if so, how to do it? PCWorld will charge £80 to do the job, I cant afford that. I have Windows XP on a Packard Bell tower PC. I use Norton Security. Can anyone help, please?
  8. I followed your instructions to the letter and..Wow..its worked! I cant thank you enough for your help. I've printed off the procedure, just in case I need it again or can pass it on to friends. Thanks so much again. Gill
  9. I've been getting fullscreen advertisements coming up, when I've opened a website page. Its happening on various websites and seems to be related to the webpage that I'm viewing. Its only been happening for the last few days. I have antivirus, antispam, anti-spyware and firewall installed. I also have phishing protection. I use mainly Firefox for browsing, but it also happens with Explorer 7. I hope I'm on the right page here. Any help to stop this will be gratefully received. Thanks
  10. I'm using Nero 9, it was included in the rewriter.
  11. I have an LG DVD Rewriter GH20 installed in my PC. I have a Packard Bell, with Windows XP Home edition 2002. The PC came with only a CD drive, so a friend, who knows his way round a computer, installed the LG. But my computer, although it seems to recognise the drive, doesnt burn anything at all. I go through the burn process and get the 'burn has successfully completed', but the disc is empty! I had wanted to burn movies that I downloaded, legally, and burn photo files, but it just doesnt work. Can anyone help, please?
  12. I'm a new member...my name is Gill and I live in the West country. I'm not a computer geek and apart from an initial lesson by an expert, I have taught myself, such as it is. I need help on more complicated things, which is why finding this site is very helpful. Hope I get to know people here. Thanks for allowing me in. :) Gill
