  1. XP Home Edition periodic crashes Hi Tootech Many thanks for your response. Please see the attachment which shows the Device Manager “Display Adapters” and System Information “Display” I have looked at Add or Remove Programs and can only find “Nvidia Drivers” I have just discovered that by going to Start/Turn Off Computer/Standby the machine immediately goes into Standby. Thereafter can be woken up with no time delay to the logon prompt and is immediately returned to it’s previous state without any error message. Does this mean just the Standby & Hibernation system is malfunctioning if so can this be repaired ? Please let me know how I can get the motherboard etc details Your continued assistance is really appreciated. ERROR info 3 21.1.09.doc
  2. XP Home Edition periodic crashes Hi Tootech When the pc went down PC Repairs Ltd traced the problem to the on board graphics and installed a new card I have just spoken with them and they say the old driver was not uninstalled.
  3. XP Home Edition periodic crashes Hi Wolfeymole As you will have realised I am hopelessly out of my depth. When the machine went down I rebooted and looked at the Event Log and followed the trail from there. It eventually took me to MS website and suggested I use Hotfix 86607 reference Article KB837432. However this seems to relate to SP1 whereas my machine is running on SP3 so I am not sure if it should be installed. In answer to your question in amongst my research it was suggested I go to Run then type cmd and at the command prompt type sc + service name the details are as per my previous attachments.
  4. XP Home Edition periodic crashes Thanks Beeceebee I love using computers but hate maintaining them so this is a “crash course” (apologies for that!) If the machine is Turned Off (via Start, Turn Off) and then rebooted the boot up is quick and with no problems and the machine and all of the various applications seemed to work flawlessly. If the machine is woken from Screen Saver no problem. However if it is allowed to go into Stand By or Hibernation eventually the machine reboots itself to the Windows Logon, after entering the password the start up takes a very long time and always has the “Recovered from a Serious Error” message, if this message is cancelled (ie no error reporting to MS) then the machine works perfectly. I have attached some copies from the event log which may be helpful especially if you can interpret them. ERROR info 1.doc
  5. XP Home Edition Periodic crashes Earlier this week the on board graphics failed it was replaced with a new card. Very shortly after Windows did an automatic update + an Outlook update then things started to go wrong. Tried to uninstall the Outlook update it would not uninstall. Tried to repair Outlook and it could not find file SKU111.cab tried to cancel repair then it called for the original CD, inserted CD and it seemed to clear but now periodically (usually when the system comes out of Standby or hibernation there is an error report saying "system has recovered from a serious error" and takes me back to the MS web site. The error message previously posted seems to have gone. XP Office Pro is installed and all seems to be well and working but boot up once past the profile logon is slow. I have used RegCure to clean the registry. Many thanks for your interest hopefully you can help.
  6. XP Home Edition SP3 running XP Office Pro. Mesh PC AMD Athlon 64 3000 1.5 meg RAM Can anyone help with the attached error message. If the machine is not being used screen saver comes on for an determined period then the system crashes and reboots to the windows logon. The attached message appears soon after logging on and a crash report sent to Microsoft. Processes running under Task Manager show 50+ processes and I'm not sure if this is part of the above problem nor how or what to close down.
  7. Thanks RP1980 & Dalo. Joining this forum has been really worthwhile. Just as RP1980 said the Buffalo drive had somehow put itself to the top of the list (even though Buffalo support said it could not happen!) It certainly didn't happen when I was using the Lacie drive so it must be something in the Buffalo software. Anyway many thanks from one happy fella:)
  8. Many thanks for your prompt reply. By chance I heard that Virgin were "doing something" with their emails (I have Virgin Boroadband) after three discussions with their Support section they re-freshed my password deleted an extension from my username and bingo all seems to be well. As an aside I have printed off all the knowledgebase information regards emails and filed it for "possible" future use.:)
  9. For no apparent reason "Enter Network Password" box keeps popping up. This does not affect connectivity, I am running Office Pro Outlook if this make any difference. It's easy just to cancel it but it comes back a regular intervals and it is becomming VERY annoying. I have researched on the web and note that there seems to be many people with the same problem but no one appears to have found a fix. Does anyone else have the same problem? does anyone have a fix? is this a bug or a problem with MS.
  10. There were 5 Opional updates for Hardware and I have installed them. 3 Software updates do not appear to relate to this problem so I have left them out. The problem still exists after the update installation, Buffalo say it's a BIOS config problem. Is it possible for you to help me check the BIOS config?
  11. Thanks Dalo. All other USB devices are ok. Windows is on automatic updates so SP3 is installed and seems to get regular updates would this include the possible update to which you refer? Is it possible for the config to change without manual intervention?
  12. Many thanks. Changing the power options to standby solves the problem when powering up from standby. However the problem still exists when re-booting from shutdown. (NB when the Lacie drive was new it was connected via the Firewire and never touched until it went wrong 3 yrs later.) Forgive me for being naive but could something have been corrupted when the Lacie drive went wrong? Would much appreciated any further help.
  13. Running MS Windows XP Home SP3. I was using a Lacie Extreme via a Firewire 400 cable but the drive started to tick (like a clock) and the Firewire stopped working. It's been replaced by a Buffalo USB 2.0 which should have been plug and play. However when left connected and the PC is hibernated or shut down at subsequent boot up initially the screen flashes with a logo then goes blank and nothing further happens. Disconnect the HD and reboot no problem then reconnect the HD it can be seen and works fine. Any help would be appreciated.
