"This Program Is Not Responding"

I reset the cache to 100 and have been frequently deleting temporary internet files. The immediate effect has been an impressive decrease in the time it takes to load pages. For instance, before these actions, it took from 30 to 90 seconds to go from one page to another on FreePC. Right away, it started taking only 3 seconds. Today it is taking 3 seconds to 20 seconds. That's a big help! Quicken never has quit responding. It only does this when I'm online. I was online yesterday and it quit responding on various websites about three times. Today I've been on about an hour and a half and it has not yet failed to respond. -
While we're Bush-bashing, there is one thing we must all remember. And that is the part our Congress has played in the mess this country is in. There's only so much a president can do. And he often may not get by Congress. Most of us focus entirely on the Office of the President. Life is too busy and we fail to pay attention to Congressional voting records come election time. And, yes, I include myself in that category. I appreciate living in a democratic society. But it's far from perfect.

Importance of Updating Drivers

Egad, Dalo--You're scaring me here! Ok, how do I determine whether I still have the old driver? -

"I am guessing that you rarely delete your temporary internet files and your cache is probably set to quite a high number." You're so right. Back in the old days I was almost fanatical about defragging and did the disk cleanup at the same time ( under Accessories>System Tools). But in the several years I've been using this laptop the analysis has never ONCE advised me to defrag. It always said "you do not need to defragment this volume". So I just quit going there. I will put up a sticky note right now to remind me to delete my temporary files. The disk space use reads 624. Guess that's too high, right? If I understand you correctly, I need to reduce that number to about 100? -
Another Use For A Handtowel

I read the writeup on the product and quote here one of the author's observations: "Using a laptop while it is resting on the Cool Travel does raise it to a more comfortable typing angle. I just wish the front elevation was a bit less'' That was the first thing I noticed when I looked at the photo of it. I guess I prefer a steeper angle, which allows me to type much faster. I imagine there are other products out there, though. This little rascal got really hot last summer (way before I thought about elevating it), when the room temperature approached 95 degrees F. I sorta figured that when the keyboard is burning your hand it's time to worry. I placed a little fan next to it and was able to keep it happy until the weather cooled down. But I'm glad to know these products exist, and may well acquire one , when I find one I really like. -

By "running several programs" (probably wrong terminology) I mean that I go to a website, minimize it, then go to my Quicken Program, minimize it, then go to my online banking, then back to Quicken, etc. ---so that there are several locations residing in the system tray at one time. Here's the stuff I have: Acer System Intel ® Pentium ® M Processor 1.70 GHz 1.70 GHz, 0.99 GB of RAM -
Another Use For A Handtowel

You mean they make thingys (specific devices) for that? Probably to be found someplace like Office Max. I should have thought of that years ago, developed and patented it and made a pile of money. Story of my life: a dollar short and a day late. -
As contrasted to all the problems I had when recently infected with malware(and solved, thanks to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help), I really shouldn't complain about this. but I'm going to anyway. Is it normal to get this several times a day? I don't mind having to close the program and start over -- except when I'm in the middle of something time-consuming and have to laborously walk through it all over again. Can running several programs at once (stuff stacked up in the system tray) cause this? Something else you can think of? Or just normal operating procedure hickups? I can live with it, but would like to decrease the frequency, if possible.

Speaking as a fellow American, I must say I've had mixed feelings about Obama. In the beginning I was impressed with his charismatic personality. And yes, we definately needed a change. The novelty of the first black American president was also intriguing. But, as 2008 moved along, many of his earlier writings, statements, and points of view were disturbing to me. He may well turn out to be the best thing to come down the turnpike in a long while. Only time will tell.

Here's a very LOW-TECH tip for laptop(or notebook--whatever you call it) users: I've used a slanted keyboard for about a hundred years and really hated the flat surface presented by the laptop. For a while I used an external keyboard, but lack of space at my present location was a problem. Frustrated with the difficulty of typing, one day I grabbed a hand towel, rolled it up and placed it at the rear ( taking care to stay clear of the air vent) of the bottom. I now no longer mind typing.

Need To Find Help With Quicken
struggling replied to struggling's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Ok, the sun's shining, it's 70 degrees and I squandered the whole day working on this. Time to wrap it up. Here's my work-around: YEAR END ACTION: I chose Archive, which copies the previous year to a separate file. Current file still contains all last year's stuff. I did not choose Start New Year, which saves a copy of curent files and new file is started that contains only new year's data. GAVE UP HAVING MY DUCKS IN A ROW Decided not to insist on all accounts being reconciled on the last day of the month. (That notion comes from early bookkeeping training) One account will just have to cycle on the 6th of the month. It turns out that Archive is much easier to work with, because one year flows into the next. I hope this may help someone else who's struggling with Wicked Quicken. Thanks, fellow members, for your interest and help. :)
