Cheers for being understanding. I think I need a check list if I ever do this again. Thanks again to you and beeceebee. I'll be making a donation after Crimbo.

You know I said I knew nothing about computers - er well, I've just found out that I forgot to put the green jack back in the back of the computer. I am such a ****! Can I just say though thanks to you both for trying to solve my problem. I think I am beyond solving though. Sorry to waste your time.

LOL - I did think of that actually. The speakers are the ones that connect via an outlet near the power cable. There's power going to them because the light is on and I've checked that the jack is in properly. I guess I need to borrow some speakers or something to see if they've somehow stopped working. It's a real mystery.

It was kind of an amalgamation of several internet sources; forums and the like. I basically just checked the volume panel and the sounds and audio devices in control panel.

My friend tells me it's on board. Realtek AC 97? Does that mean anything. I'm sorry I'm so obtuse.
