The error message was in my original post - so you can see the error number was 0x80070424. I tried your command line and it worked - yippee. I rebooted after running the prompt and went into Windows Update - I now have 88 updates to install. Thank you so much for your time - it is greatly appreciated.

I have Auto Update turned on - but no auto updates coming through. When trying to manually update from the microsoft site I get the error message from this URL http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/muoptdefault.aspx?returnurl=http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate&ln=en-us&muopt=6 I run Symantecs Norton 2011 as my Anti Virus software - and as far as I am aware there are no viruses. However, I know how devious these little things are. I can run Update 2 different ways - one from the Start menu and one from the Safety tab - Windows Update (with Internet Explorer running). Either way gives me the same error message

I decided to get some updates but I cannot get into the update pages - I am met with the following error message The faqs and find solution options do not help at all.
