think I found the problem did a bit of reading about the drive, I took it out of my new pc with win7, it appears to be a wd caviar 10ears 4k drive, the jumper needs to be set or aligment software which seems to out of date also, oh dear I have another hd to buy and a free drive to sit and gather dust, there is an emulator to emulate 512k sectors but I think I will pass, thanx for the help much appreciated

hd format i just put the 2nd hd into a docking station and formatted full ntfs just to make sure its not damaged in any way

i did a quick ntfs format with 2nd drive when 1st drive unplugged b4 loading winxp, 2nd drive had win7, it had two partions which i deleted and made 1 primary partition, on the surface of the 2nd drive it says jumper settings for the drive in various partitons and uses, the 2nd hd is a wdc wd10 ears-22y5b1, mobo msi p6n, winxp sp3, intel duo core 6600, gtx 440, i recently took out the GC and put the gtx in, originally it was a palit gt9 nvidia. i will gladly add any further info, I've never had any probs like this, sure I have had drives not showing up but I always managed to suss it and fix it, I don't want to swapped the 2nd drive to another pc for primary use and vice versa as I am just through, updating four pc's with various os installs.

tweakui test did what you advised, drive shows up ticked with a red circle and a white question mark, along with g h i j k etc all the same, it was already checked, I unchecked then rechecked and applied but everything is the same. The drive still cannot be found.

I have a cavier green 1tb hd, it had win7 on it, I deleted it and did a quick format, I want it as a 2nd internal hd. I have a sata2 samsung 500GB with winxp on it as the primary drive, I have tried everything to get the 2nd drive to show up, it shows up in the bios and the device manager but not in my computer nor disk management, I have swapped the drives about in the case and the bios, maybe these drives are incompatable eg speeds, any ideas would be appreciated, I have searched the net in vain for a solution.

taking the rise well i read a little bit about risers. I had seen something on the net which said make sure u have enough risers and not too many, a piece of paper and pencil was used to denote where and how many spacers etc, well I removed the mobo and counted, nine holes on mobo, but 8,9...10 risers, removed a riser and viola booted up, maybe early days but i can at last get my retro gaming pc setup, thanx for all help and i hope this post helps others in the future.

mobo touching case the case has built in spacers, i applied the ones that came with the case also, when i tighten the screws, the machine wont boot, when i loosen them it starts up, or that seems to be the problem. the guy in the pc shop gave me eight round sticky pieces of rubber to put on the mobo to stop the screws touching but i thought i would ask here b4 going ahead seems a make do and mend to me

motherboard out tried it with the mobo out, maybe take it for a diagnostic at the local pc store and just buy the wonky part i think, but thanx for any replies

speaker i found a speaker small round black plastic with speaker written on the plau plug plugged into front panel jumper but still no sound, lifted cpu, thermal paste flat and spread evenly, re did, no beeps

speaker i have a cable from the front panel that says audio, from that there is a large connector with M.B. on the back and several others with mic bios etc, i tried plugging the mb into jaudio jumper on mobo but nothing, i tried it outside the mobo but no beeps with everything out except psu power 24 pin and cpu 4pin nothing, thanx for the link but i had tried all that, one of the fan clips for cpu has snapped the ones that go thru the mobo, but the fan still seems tight, i might change it

I had a lot of spares so decided to build a spare pc, i press botton on front of case and it powers on and off when i hold it in, so it isnt that. my specs 1x dvd writer Intel duo 6600 MSI P6N SLI mobo 2x 1 gig sticks ram 800 ddr2 Vitesta extreme edition A Data 1x sata2 HD 500 meg 850 watt psu almost new, worked fine in other pc with even higher specs 1 palit gf9600gt 1024meg ddr2 128b GC everything worked b4 i have done things like this b4 and it worked fine I am getting no boot up, no beeps, just a black screen, the fans work, hd works, psu fans work, dvd works, have pulled everything out till only the cpu and psu, no beeps, tried all configurations, i may have the front panel headers in wrong but would that stop the machine from booting? thought after reading all i could on trouble shooting, i thought i would ask here first b4 taking it to a specalist to see what might need replaced.

i did a restore and installed avg, it found four trojans in a program i had installed but that was after I had the trouble, installed all the updates again, and everything was fine for a while, then it just did it again, froze, cursor stuck etc, iobit malware has an exclamation mark over it after i updated, think i will need to take this to the shop and yes all my software is the original article. I have two xp's, one vista ans two win 7's, i have linux downstairs and never a problem, wish more worked with linux

1st I have only made three posts on this forum, one was in 2009, sorry about making 2 threads an honest mistake anyone could make. My pc is giving me a headache, I have reinstalled windows many times, the pc runs fine until i install updates then it starts to play up, I installed avast and it keeps messing up, secuirity essentials made my cpu run at 100% usage, took it off and tried to install avg but it wont install, I had .net framework 2 on my pc, vtfedit worked fine, then latest update 3.5 installed and nothing requiring 2.0 would install or run. I have changed just about everything in the pc, hd keep crashing, makes a strange noise, I take it out and put new hd in and it works fine, but goes through the same odd behaviour when I dl updates. my pc is a custom pc win xp asus striker extreme mobo intel quad 9650 GC Palit 9600 GT Seagate Sata 2 500GIG HD Corsair 4 gig vengeance 1666 ram running at 1333 used other modules, A-Data 800 mhz psu 570 watt, might be underpowered, will be buying an 850 watt next week. soprano case i am installing win xp from sp2 original disc, without net connection, then installing asus drivers, then nvidia drivers, then comodo firewall, i defrag after every install, just something i do. i then go onto net and register, and dl the updates, i dl as much as it offers me, i then have to dl updates such as .net framework 2.0 on my own or when a program that needs it asks me if i want to dl it. i install av and smart defrag 2, adaware keeps messing up so i have stopped using it to. all stuff xp, drivers, comodo firewall from disks, defrag from a burnt disc and anti virus from net, they only let you dl installers and not the full issue. they are my pc discs, came with hardware, nividia dl'd from their site and installed from burnt disc. not sure what you mean by what does it say on install discs discs used have been new installed all updates available Failed to connect to server. i tried uninstalling framework 2, not allowed; it is being used by other programs, then got a fatal error pop up, tested my hd with seagate tools and tested mem with memtest everything fine
