i havnt worked on it yet but its a computer my dad used to work on when i first started it up after like 2/3 years of not being used it worked then i shut it down when i come back the screen just goes blank after the hp sceen

i have just started building computers of my own but i have been learning for a year now i have a pc on xp home edition. the problem is when i turn it on it goes on to the hp screen then goes blank ?
