  1. yes i did that but where do you restart it from the hard drive? also like i said on a previous message on that second set of commands when i typed in the middle command it came up with the mess, this file already exists..... so not sure if that is why it didnt work?
  2. how do i go about saving the contents of my hard drive so then i can restore the system back to the orignal factory settings and then reput it on the system?
  3. when i type in ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old, it comes up with the message a duplicate file name exists, or the file cannot be found. is it supposed to say this.
  4. just typed in bootrec/fixboot, and it said the operation completed successfully. what now?
  5. i did this : Type bootrec /rebuildbcd and then press ENTER • If Bootrec cannot locate any missing Windows installations, you must remove the BCD store, and then you must re-create it. To do this, type the following commands in the order shown below: (Remember to press ENTER after each command) bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old bootrec /rebuildbcd
  6. i just typed in what the previous guy stated to type in, and then i typed in the extra bit he said not 'yes' because it could find any windows files.
  7. my vista recov disc doesnt have the repair option so i burnt that link you gave me to the disc, which works but when i got to select a system there arent any to select, and i went through the command prompt swith no success. so im at a loss. have some guy coming around at 7.30 charging £30/hr so really wnt to get i t fixed b4 that especially as he might not be able to get my data back anyways.
  8. the discs i have are alien respawn, which i believe puts the comp back to factory settings, i also have the nero 7 essential software, the master cd and the microsoft windows vista home premium system recovery dvd but none of them seem to work
  9. dell presto do you have a contact no? just tried what you said and it didnt work, but for some reason i couldnt select an operating system, and didnt know what to click in load drivers.
  10. operation system is blank, so i think i need to click on load drivers and then what should i select?
  11. i put in the disc wchich i had burnt and then selected the repair option however it has now come back to the same menu as before saying BOOTMGR is missing?
  12. ok i am currently burning the disc, and then will try this and hopefully it will have the repair computer option. thanks for all your help so far, much appreciated!
  13. ok might have to do that then, what do you mean when you say command promp option what will this say or look like?
