hi what i need to know is do viruses only come from websites. i reinstalled xp on my sons pc and within a few days he had the virus again. he said he did not visit any dodgy websites. i thought the best way to kill viruses was to reinstall but do i need to use a new hard drive or is it that he must of visited a webpage to pick it up. when i rewrote it i put ms secruity essenstionals as a av protecter which works fine on my pc. the virus he got was one of those av ones. thanks

its ok sorted now. just by luck i turned the screen round and the light shone on it and i could just see that windows was there so i unplugged the monitor from the back of pc and plugged it back in and then i could see the screen and it was already there waiting for me to complete the next step so i can only presume it was a graphics problem. im happy now -

the 160 wont start so i dont think i can do a chkdsk the 80 is a second hand one
-
ok i will now do you think i should do a chkdsk scan when i turn the new hdd on
-
no i didnt i have bought a new hdd caddy called certified usb 2.0 and have put a second hand 80gb hdd in and formatted it to nftc and it shows up as (f) when plugged in. it was on for about an hour it it felt quite hot. i got an info leaflet with it but it didnt answer my questions: 1, do you only turn the external hdd on when you need it. to do weekly back ups. 2, do you need to shut the pc down first, before turning Ehdd off. i have nero on my pc which offers a back up program do you think i should try that one instead of one care. i have 3pc in the house all with onecare on and this pc is the hub. i used to run back ups on dvd disc but i thought an e hdd would be a better option.
-
im sorry i dont know the make or model as i got it from ebay and i have wrote to the seller for info i put a different hdd in the caddy and it worked ok so it seems to as me that the caddy has got too hot and burned the hdd out which is a pee off cos it was a 160gb and i had just put all my back ups on it which took up 47gb. im running 3 pc on my network and using windows onecare. any ideas if the 160 hdd can be fixed? im not worried about the data but its a big hdd to lose

hi ive just fitted an external hdd to pc and its worked ok for 2 days. turned it on today and its making bleeping noise and the light is red . i didnt get any instruction with it so i dont know if you should switch it off at night but it felt hot and it has a built in fan. it doesnt say the maker on the the case so i cant check it on web. i need some advice as ive never had an external hdd before. thank you
