  1. ok wolfey, in answer to your earlier question, it only asks me to boot from the cd once at the beginning.
  2. ok no need to get *****y Wolfey - in case you hadnt noticed I am a beginner at this. I've never opened a tower up in my life. I was just seeing if there was a way of doing it without opening up the tower, because I didnt know how to and didnt want to mess anything up. Youre meant to be a moderator man, dont be so damn sarcastic.
  3. thanks maynard - just out of pure laziness, is there any way of knowing which it is without opening the tower up? I presume your post was referring to the cabling inside the tower?
  4. I think if anything the anonymity of the internet allows people to reveal their true selves. I mean if I knew I could murder rape and steal without getting confronted or caught, doesn't mean I would actually want to. These comments are obviously peoples true feelings. If I was to face these people, of course the majority of them would never say these things, but thats more to do with fear than anything else. I salute you for trying to see the good in people, its a positive mindset. However I myself couldn't possibly see any good in anyone who leaves such awful comments. Thats just me I guess.
  5. I respect what you're saying wellies - but I think its one thing to express dislike for someone, and something else entirely to actually say youre glad that someone is dead. I can understand people disliking him, whether for his music, or the things he has done in his life. I can appreciate those views and agree people have a right to express them. But some of the comments I've been reading online, such as people glad he's dead, hope he burns in hell, that he deserved to die, calling him a paedo, kiddy fiddler, all of this stuff, is just not acceptable. If this shows the diversity of human nature, then I am ashamed to be living in such a society.
  6. thanks danzil - unfortunately I dont know what type of hard drive I have, and its a second hand computer given to me so I dont have anything it would have come with. If I can find out what type of harddrive I have by opening the tower up, are there websites I can download the drivers from, put them onto a floppy and then boot using that?
  7. I tried to format my C drive and reinstall windows XP home. Unfortunately, it let me format the drive, but when I tried to install windows it keeps coming up with an error.. Ill run you through what im doing. Startup with XP disc in. Press any key. Then it asks if I want to install XP or try to recover a previous version. I go for a clean install. It scans my drives, and finds a partition already being used on C (as it keeps getting halfway and then messing up) Ive tried both deleting the current partition and creating a new one, and recovering the current partition. It then asks whether I want to install with FAT or the other one (NTPS I think?) There are 4 options, Fat and NTPS with quick, or FAT and NTPS without. Ive tried all 4 options. With each attempt it will get about halfway, and then come up with a stop error message, saying it has stopped to prevent damage to my computer. It will either have no technical error message, or come up with this.. DRIVER IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL Or sometimes it will get about halfway through the install, and then it will come up with the file USRPRBDA.EXE missing, and the options to quit the install, carry on without using the file, or retry finding the file. If i retry more than 2/3 times, it will come up with a stop error screen. If I skip the file it will come up with a stop error screen. Please help? can someone run me through what I need to do?
  8. Have some respect for the dead.. He had a lot of bad things in his life, his father for one. He had a hard upbringing and it was inevitable that he would end up in a bad way. But I dont believe for a second the accusations against him, a judge and jury found him innocent. What more proof do you need? You want god himself to come down and say he was innocent? Apparantly the United States legal system isnt something to be believed anymore.. He was the king of pop, he had a magical career, and yes its a shame he burned out the way he did, but its still no reason to disrespect him.
  9. theres nothing in disk management, just drive C. And ive tested all my usb ports with different plug and play devices and they all work fine. The hard drive itself is ok because ive tested it on 3 other computers and it all works fine.
  10. Wolfeymole - no, pack 2 i believe. maynard - tried it, doesnt work. I4n - Maplins said because I had already used the hard drive they couldnt take it back or give me refund/credit. I may have to resort to reinstalling windows completely... but that seems such a drastic course of action, I cant believe there isnt a logical way of fixing this..
  11. im not that stupid :p yes its all plugged in. Like I said, my computer recognizes it, but only recognizes it as an "unknown device"
  12. ok just got it back from maplins and plugged it in. Still not working, Theres nothing in disk management, and under USB controllers in device manager its recognized but comes up as "unknown device." When I open this up it says no drivers have been installed. I tried updating drivers but it cant find anything, rolling back drivers doesnt work, and i tried uninstalling and reinstalling the usb drivers but that didnt work either. According to the guy at maplins, the plug and play device basically uses drivers that are already on Windows XP, and he suggested maybe the drivers the device is trying to use are corrupted. Problem is he couldnt even guess what/where they would be, and maxtor are absolutely useless at helping me... Please help?
  13. lets assume im an idiot :p How do I get to disc management, and how do I get to device manager? (im not sure which one ive been going through)...
  14. sorry what I meant was I've been right through device manager which also includes disk management. So basically yes I have :p I've been hearing a lot of horror stories about maxtor.. and worst of all the business that sold it to me said if I cant get it working on my computer its not their problem. I hope I can get this sorted..
