  1. I was playing Skyrim and downloading some mods from the skyrim website when my computer stopped functioning and could no longer load skyrim so I thought it would be a good idea to close skyrim then turn off the computer it was not turning off properly. I then had the option to start "safe mode" or "normal mode" (i chose normal). after doing this it said there's an error it proposed to go to a previous point in time and remove the malicious software and apparently it was skyrim. I tried re-installing it but it would not re-install. Then after further inspection in the program files i found it was still there, but was not responding and could not open "steam"( the progam that allows you to get tech-support and play and add licence for the game. What do I do?:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad: also. just to let you know: operating system is not Windows XP it is Windows 7 Pro
  2. Yes it does help, thank you very much.
  3. am just starting an open university course (physics) and have the chance to submit my assignments on line. The files should be no more than 5mb and past experience has shown me that scanning written work (average 15 pages) creates files much bigger than this. People have suggested ''zipping pdf files'', or ''compressing jpg's'' or alternatively use LaTeX (? a word type package with extensive equation editor?). I have no idea what any of these terms mean, nor do I know if LaTeX is simply like having a drop down menu of usable maths symbols or if I have to type in instructions (programming?) in order to insert equations. Also, I will shortly be buying a new computer (I need a 'tower' only) this one being over 10 years old!! and wondered if you had any tips for me (the spec's bang on about RAM and Graphics cards, duel cores and other stuff I dont understand) Sorry to post so many queries in one go, but any comments gratefully received. Thanks.
  4. Hi dee ** peeps I am studying with the open university and have been told I can send my assignments to them electronicly as long as my files are in pdf format. I hand write my work (wot includes lots of maths, sketches and graphs), then scan this into my p.c. (as a jpeg). Any ideas how I can convert these images into pdf? or .... is there some some other method of getting writen work into a pdf (I remember a friend of mine had some kind of pen but dont know if this was a writing tool or just a fancy mouse) Any comments gratefully received as at the moment I have to send assignments by post which means I have to complete them about 7 days before the "cut-off date"!
  5. I am studying with the open university and have the option of sending assignments via e-mail. This is easy enough when sending written essays, but most of my course work involves the manipulation of mathematical expressions and my keyboard doesn't even allow me to type powers or roots let alone aything more complicated. I have found a programme called Mathtype but this costs 97 USD. Having never used the p.c. to write maths I am loathe to lay out so much cash only to find that it's easier to simpy scan in my handwritten work as an attachment. Does anyone have experience of these kind of programmes who could advise me of their usefulness and/or know of any FREE programmes I could have a play around with?
  6. This is not what you'd call high priority but it is annoying. Like many people my " and @ keys have been swapped around. I reset the language to English (United Kingdom) a few days ago, but the problem persists. Any suggestions?
  7. ee by 'eck Lad, but tha knows thy stuff! I've done as suggested and not only cleared about 37 trojans, tracking cookies and other stuff, but have been able to reactivate automatic updates for windows (have had to e-mail microsoft to say thanks for their offer of help, but I no longer need it!) I now have malwarebytes and superantispyware on my desktop and am now gonna have a go at installing Avira (with firewall) and therefore uninstall Ashampoo. Thank you very much for you help, especially the idiot proof step-by-step instructions!
  8. You can see from my profile that I am very new to this game of doing something to my PC other than using the net to find out whats on TV! I am unable to reactivate automatic updates on the windows security centre and so contacted microsoft who suggested running my antivirus programme whilst in safe mode. I apparently do not have an AV programme - Ashampoo is simply a firewall I think - and so I ran (but did not install) onelive as suggested by microsoft. This found 18 nasties but only cleared 11 of them, so I began looking for ways to 'clear' the rest. Following one of the threads in this forum, I have looked at Avira, Avast and followed links to spyware Dr. I have NO experience of using AV programmes so want something that is VERY easy to use, but naturally want to be able to remove those things 'uncleared' by one-live. I have come accross phrases like worm and trojan remover in my search for the right download and have basically come to complete mental meltdown. Can anyone suggest a suitable FREE download that is both easy to use and will afford my PC with protection whilst being able to clear the trojans (or whatever they are) already on my system. (NB. it has to be FREE as I have yet to figure out how to set up paypal to enable me to use my French bank card on international sites!!)
  9. What happens if I compress a folder? Can I do this to somehow send a whole load of photos to my Mum (for her to "uncompress"?), rather than attaching a few at a time to an e-mail? Any suggestions most welcome as I got about 200 piccy's I'd like to send!!
  10. Am finally taking the plunge and am writing my very first message on a forum (cannot believe how nervous I am!) Anyway hello to all, and especially Wolfeymole from whom I have already taken advice (using easeus to departitioin my computer) which has saved me the cost of a new computer!! Having discovered that I will not blow up the world if I press a key, I think I may just be using this machine more often.
