  1. Ok. Thanks for the advice -I'll look into a new one.
  2. Well some would have been deleted, but the back up I made earlier this week, which was 171Gb, should have had all my stuff on. Don't worry the data's still on my pc.
  3. Further to my last post, I've been looking around my back up drive and to my horror can't find any of my photos, videos or downloads! I just don't know what's taking up the space and where everything is. I can't find anything dated later than 2010 and that's after doing a backup this week. Thinking about reformatting the external drive and starting afresh.
  4. Hi, I have an external hard drive which I've been using for 8/9 years. It was set to automatically back up and created sets of back ups which I could enter and delete the oldest ones as space filled up. At the beginning of this year I backed up my Android phone to my pc before sending it away for repair - it was a large backup around 40Gb which meant I hadn't space to do anymore. I won't go into why I haven't done anything about the back ups since but a couple of days ago I deleted my phone back up from the pc and the old back ups on the external hard drive and did a fresh back up and couldn't believe it when it filled the hard drive again. Any ideas as to what's going on? I should also say that I also deleted the system image the other day as that seemed to be taking a lot of space, thinking it would make a new one, but it doesn't seem to have made one. My external hard drive is 232Gb and the back up I just did was 171Gb. My PC hard drive is 295GB with 239Gb used.
  5. So are you saying it could have come through the router, even though that wasn't affected?
  6. Hi All, Bit of a strange topic question but bear with me. A couple of months ago my network adapter was knocked out after thunderstorms At the weekend I was going to connect a power surge protector where previously, I thought, I only had an ordinary extension cable with sockets, however when I unplugged everything and retrieved the said cable and sockets from behind the computer cupboard it turned out to be surge protected. So, here's where my question comes in, the pc was plugged into the surge protector but the router was plugged into and adjacent powerline adapter (so not surge protected), so would the network adapter have been knocked out by a surge coming through the router or did it come through the pc? In which case either the surge protector I have isn't working or it wasn't a surge and just coincidence that the network adapter didn't work right after the thunderstorm.
  7. Good news - as I was unplugging everything in preparation to take it to the pc shop tomorrow the power cable dropped out of the monitor, so I put it back in and decided to give it one last go and hey presto! it's up and running. I don't know if it was just loose or it's coincidence. Maybe when I was checking the video cable and moving the monitor about it worked loose and that was why there were no lights showing. I know that should have been one of the first things I checked but anyway it all started normally without me having to press the F8 so I'll see how it goes now. Thanks Ken for all your help. :)
  8. I could if I had a different machine.
  9. Thanks, but I don't think I'm up to that. I think I'll give the computer shop in town a call.
  10. I've unplugged the video cable - pins look ok, but when i've plugged it back in nothing's happening with the monitor when i switch it on now. Not sure what the POST beeps are or sound like, but there's no beeping. No, there's no microsoft chimes. I think the hard drive's spinning.
  11. Hi Ken When I switch the power on the name of the monitor comes on and the blue light which shows it's on does too, but then it just goes to orange again and the screen stays blank. Nothing happens now when i press F8. I don't have another monitor that I can try it with.
  12. Hi, A couple of months ago I posted a thread about my lost internet connection after thunderstorms, I also mentioned that my monitor wasn't working. The monitor problem seemed to have been resolved at the time, but since then if ever I've shut the pc down completely I've had problems getting the monitor going again usually pressing F8 on boot up has worked, however, this time it hasn't. Any suggestions?
  13. Thanks Ken, but I've already tried all that Anyway I decided to go wireless with the pc so I bought a network adapter today and I'm up and running again.
  14. Yes it is and I can report that the monitor is now working ok.
