    Thank you Folks, thanks for all your advice. I managed to obtain a set of XP discs and after a bit of muddling about got things back to normal. Many thanks again, human nature is still tops......... Greetings from Scotland to you all.

    Bought a replacement hard drive for son's PC, fitted, recovered, all set up ok. Went to bed, got up, message <Windows boot>\system32\hal.dll appears. Tried the Recovery Console, no joy. Any suggestions please. Thanks in advance. Windows XP Home Edition, new drive is Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 500Gb
