its on thumbnails, double click on picture should open it but doesn't. When i right click and click edit, picture opens in "paint"

Hi when i try to open a photo from my pictures, all that happens is a microsoft photo editor button appears in the panel at the bottom of the screen but the photo does not open. Photos will run, however, in slideshow. It was working perfectly yesterday! Many thanks Graham (windows xp home)
