Hi There, I've suddenly started getting full screen popup ads appearing behind my browser windows. It happens using both Firefox and IE, and on both my home PCs, so the only common denominator is Talk Talk / AOL. I have popup blockers activated on both browsers (I Think) Both PCs run Vista, home basic on laptop home premium in desktop. both have Norton Security. Any Ideas? or is it just a part of the internet experience John :eek:

connections to Router via cable in Vista64

Finally sorted Hi all, I think I'm finally sorted on this problem. I had already tried the default Windows drivers on the "old" card so ordered a new "vista" one and downloaded some 64bit updated drivers. I also had a brain storming session with my son in law at the weekend doing such things as "ping" commands etc. He left with the opinion that it was the router and not the card, but when he left the problem with both slightly flacky internet access and no wireless printer connectivity remained. After he left I couldn't even get to talk with the router, so installed the new ethernet card, still no network This morning I tried resetting up the Router using the laptop, noteing all steps and any detail, then switched to the desktop, instant success. I then tried the installing the printer, but for some reason when connecting the USB cable for setting up the wireless link, used a rear USB socket instead of a front one, success immediately. Now faced with the minor problem of limited front usb functions. Many thanks to all who contributed John:):):) -

Hi Snow, Tried first point, both were set to a specified IP ad so, set them back to auto set. It then showed a unknown connection as it did before. I tried the network card from my XP machine, (before I removed it I downloaded an update zip file). When installing in the new machine it didn't like the original CDbased drivers and the update package informed me that it doesn't support Vista! John -

The laptop can see and use the printer wirelessly, and is in the network map as an associated unit at the bottom of the window with a 12 digit reference number, if I double click on it it opens with printer and memory slot icons The desktop network shows the laptop, and the same 12digit number reference as 2 icons but this when clicked on shows a network error box saying "windows cannot access (12 digit number) 8527E88527E9 and an error code 0x80070035 when diagnosed it comes up with "not a valid host name" John -

not yet fully OK Hi There, I'm now up and running with access to internet, and am starting to install software. The network is still not perfect. 1. A small point and not sure whether it's important. Ive named the network SSID in the router. My laptop (working wirelessly) picks up this SSID name in the network and sharing centre, in both the graphic and the connection detail. This unit, the new desktop, names it "network" in the graphics and Local Area connection in the connection detail. 2. I have a Canon wireless printer which used to connect to the previous desktop wirelessly via the router. It refuses to do so to the new one. It still works wirelessly with the laptop. The Canon setup system says it cannot find the printer, and when I use the canon network utility it says there is no port installed, and then refuses to let me install one. I've found and installed Canon updates from their website. John -

Success! sort of Hi there. I've at last been able to get onto the internet via the Ethernet cable and Router. I found the way to manually set the IP address and succeeded in getting rid of the Red cross, even though there was a warning that I'd nominated the same IP ad as another computer (presumably my Laptop). I then switched back to auto- IP address, and a better one was found automatically that resolved the clash. However the connection speed seems to be even slower than normal. Many thanks for your help Snow John -

further work Hi There, back from hols now and trying to pick up where I left off. I tried my laptop ethernet link this morning, and after some work in the windows network setup area it worked OK. This is a 32bit basic Vista, the problem unit is 64bit home premium. I also downloaded on this XP machine, and and then copied and installed updated LAN drivers on the desktop, but still no go. I'm borrowing another router this weekend to try, but I'm beginning to wonder if the mobo's LAN system is U/S. I guess going wireless with this unit is a way to go, and use the laptop for any router setups. The MOBO (ASRock 4core1600-glan) has a WiFi/E header but requires it's own adaptor, which seems to be difficult to find. Is it better to get an internal card or a USB one, It does seem crazy using wireless to cover a 12" distance. Any ideas anyone? John:confused: -

failure Hi Snow, Tried your suggestion, no go I'm afraid. Is it likely to be any better using a wireless dongle instead of the ethernet link? My Vista laptop works wirlessly, or is the 64bit a factor. Presumably a new router quoted as being suitable for use with Vista64 would work. Should have stuck with XP Many thanks for your help, away on hols for a week will pick up again when back John -

Gooday, I'm just completed constructing a new computer (with help from yourselves) and have loaded Vista premium 64bit. I have been using a REDTEN router connected to my previous XP Desktop with wifes laptop wirelessly connected. This has been sucessfull. The New Desktop has been connected via ethernet and sees the router as an unidentified network, but doesn't allow internet access (big red cross). I've tried all usual routes to get round this and am wondering if the 64bit was a step too far. Redten appears to be defunct so there is no support from them. any ideas?:( John -

Problem solved, for now. Hi there, Just to let you know that the new PSU solved the problem. As suggested I connected up just the MB, Ram and switched on, the speaker gave one beep followed by a series of 4 or 5. I then switched off and connected the rest of the components, loaded windows and the drivers from the MB and Graphics boards discs. All seems OK although I'm presently having trouble communicating with my router, as the instructions only goes up to XP, but I'm sure Ill get to the bottom of it. If not I'll come back in the appropriate forum Many Thanks for your assistance John:) -

Thanks Snow, It looks as if you have misread / misunderstood my 2nd message, The computer did show signs of life with the proven PSU, ie the processor fan started and the motherboard beeped. I didn't make a note of the code, but there is no mention of code meanings in my MB manual. I am intending to wait until tomorrow when the replacement unit should arrive, and then start again. Under normal circumstances is the board likely to be able to output to screen at first boot? John:) -

reply Hi There, Many thanks for prompt reply. I tried unplugging all except MB, still no life. Tried replacing the new 450w PSU with a known old one (300w) now sign of life in board with processor fan working and sounds from "speaker" now going to attempt to get a replacement PSU. The system I'm building for reference is AsRock 4core1600-glan MB Intel core2 duo E7500 2MB Kingston 5300cl5 Ram 350g Sata drive Samsung sh-s223b DVD writer N-880D case with 450w or 0w psu John
