  1. Hi Synapse Thanks for that. I don't know how to do a system restore but will try reinstalling Kaspersky later on today (it's on my wife's laptop). Yes everything else seems to be working ok. I'll let you know how I get on. Once again thanks, Dave
  2. Hi All. I hope you can help. The kaspersky shortcut has disappeared from my desktop, and windows security centre indicates there are problems ie., Firewalls are OFF, and malware is out of date. Clicking the windows security centre options and then selecting 'turn on kaspesky firewall' and 'update kaspersky malware' has no effect (just the timer 'ring' for a few seconds then nothing! Also I cannot accessing kaspersky from the start menu, again clicking on kaspersky achieves nothing. Can anybody help with this please, it's the weekend and there are no options to speak to a human at kaspersky support. Many thanks in anticipation Dave.
  3. Hi Dave Thanks for that. I'll see what comes up with Ubuntu loaded but I haven't come across any yet - not been looking in particular though. Hopefully they'll be at the cheaper end pricewise? Sorry for the delay in replying but I haven't been 'on line' for a while. Thanks again Dave
  4. Hello All My old PC is finally failing - just freezes completely with desktop or application open, only option is to hold the start button until it shuts down. Then it generally takes several restarts to actually get it going (and then only with the Ubuntu 9.10 disk in the D drive). Anyway i'm totally happy with Ubuntu for my 'basic' computing needs and am looking for a laptop to use. Does anyone have an opinion on an Acer Aspire5551A , 3GB memory 250GB hdd, dual core AMD Athlon (£400 from Argos)? Also it comes with an Acer 3 year warranty, is this ok? I'll probably get rid of windows and only run Ubuntu will this affect the warranty? If anyone can recommend a better/cheaper set up I will willingly consider it. I hope this is posted in the correct forum and many thanks in anticipation. Thanks Dave.
  5. Hello LinkindinkinPark Thanks for that, the PC is about 7 years old so you could well be right about the hardware failure. We have been preparing ourselves to replace it with a cheap laptop. As I want to avoid MS products I will continue aclimatising myself to Ubuntu (using hibernate). And when the time comes we hope the forum will be able to advise us on getting a laptop without MS loaded. And thanks again for your help with this. Dave
  6. Hi All I checked it out last night and this is what happens: Ubuntu starts almost always with the CD in. Remove CD and Ubuntu continues to function ok. ‘Restart’ without CD is ok. ‘Hibernate’ without CD and it wakes ok. ‘Shut down’ without CD in then start. Small Ubuntu logo appears on screen for a short while and then nothing! If this can't be resolved I'm ok with using 'hibernate', will that be ok in the long term? Regards Dave
  7. Hi Plastic Nev Yes the hard drive was working ok prior to installing Ubuntu. I'm fairly sure that once it's up and running I can remove the CD and still work with Ubuntu, but I'm at work so will have to check that out this evening. (would that indicate the hard drive is ok?) Hopefully someone will be able to advise how to check what type of CD I have. Many thanks Dave
  8. Hi LinkindinkinPark Thanks for that but unfortunately it doesn't mean a thing to me. I believe the pc is IDE. But being a complete numpty I'll need leading by the hand if you'd be so kind. I inserted the Ubuntu cd and selected 'use the whole disc' for the installation, it worked ok for the first 4 or 5 startups but now pretty much nothing happens. First the CD 'D' drive light flickers for a short while then the 'C' drive light flickers for a very short while and then nothing! If I insert the CD and restart, Ubuntu eventually starts up. I hope this can be remedied because I really don't want to reinstall MS XP. Many thanks in anticipation Dave.
  9. Hi All I hope you can help. I've loaded ubuntu 9.10 onto my pc, it doesn't have windows now. The problem is ubuntu won't start, push the power button and the power light stays on the other lights flicker, but nothing happens on screen. Insert the ubuntu cd and start up again and it's ok! Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Dave
  10. Excellent. Thanks Jelly Bean, as usual 'your best' is more than good enough. Diolch yn fawr iawn, Dave
  11. Hi All I got a Ubuntu CD and wanted to use it live to try it out. I must have gone wrong somewhere because it's tried to install it onto the hard drive. When I start the PC it offers either Windows XP or Ubuntu. If i select ubuntu it can't find everythnig it needs to run. What I need is to uninstall Ubuntu from the hard drive (not much space left) and just run it from the CD to try it because I want to ultimately get rid of Microsoft. I mainly use the PC for basic word processing, spreadsheets, photo editing/printing and storage, Itunes/Ipod playlists etc, and internet browsing. I've have been using Openoffice in Windows XP for quite a while now and it's absolutely fine. Any (easy to follow) help would be much appreciated, regards Dave.
  12. Hi Armageddon & Tootech. Thanks for your replies but events have rather overtaken us. Yes we had disabled the security, updated all the software and uninstalled everything the upgrade advisor recommended. But Kate finally gave up and returned the disc. I am trying to get to grips with Ubuntu (a 'getting started' guide would help but I haven't come across one yet) because ultimately we would like to abandon microsoft. Unfortunately our lack of technical capability is causing a major block to Ubuntu. Anyway thanks again for your help, Dave.
  13. Hi All, I'm back again. Kate (my partner) has finally given up on Vista and bought Windows 7 (disc) from Amazon. Have tried 4 times now (after carrying out all the recommendations of upgrade advisor) and after a couple of hours, at 62% (every time) it says the upgrade was unsuccessful and the original OS is reinstalling. There are no other error messages or clues at all. Please help. Many thanks in anticipation Dave (& Kate)
  14. Hi Armageddon Yes it worked great thanks. Start-Control Panel-Programs-Default Programs-Set default programs, then selected the .doc entry and changed it to open with 'swriter'. Ditto with .xls. Kate can now read, copy, edit etc., all of her attachments. Yet again thank you very much this forum has proved invaluable. Dave
  15. Hi Armageddon Thanks for your prompt response, the laptop is using Vista but I'll try your suggestion when I get home from work today. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again, Dave
