Have done the tap f8 at startup and choose "disable auto restart on system failure", I had to restart to do that, its just brought me back to the blue screen

my comp has decided due to a virus I think to shut down, I am getting the blue screen asking me if this has happened before etc etc, I re started clicking the F8 button but I cannot even get in through safe mode. I have a virus checker on disc but do not know how to activate it as I cannot get into safe or any other kind of mode. Thanks folks Karen
