  1. Hi Jelly Bean, Yeah thanks for your time and effort and everything but my dad took the laptop today and restored it to the factory settings. It had been a week now and he was fed up of me promising to him that I could sort it. So cheers anyway. Good luck to anyone else who faces this problem. Everyone I've read has pretty much just given up! I had tried your previous suggestion as well. Thanks again
  2. Hi Jelly Bean, I appreciate your thorough and detailed approach, and the time and effort you put into explaining this to me. However, I cannot even access my desktop. My desktop background loads and that is literally as far as I can go - no start menu, no icons. I am writing to you now through my other computer, a mac, and this is how I am accessing the internet and therefore this blog. I was recommended by a colleague to download TRK in order to try and sort the problem, but it is still all a little beyond me! Thanks, Cookaboy
  3. Hi there, I am running a Sony VAIO laptop and recently my windows XP has failed to start up. It manages to reach the log in screen and once the password has been typed in it comes up with the desktop background but fails to go beyond there. The start menu does not appear, neither does any icons. All that comes up is that the applications such as lsass.exe, userinit.exe and EXPLORER.EXE do not work because they are missing msls52.dll?? Basically it says - lsass.exe - Unable To Locate Component - This application has failed to start because msls52.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem. I had found this solution (Security Forums :: View topic - LSASS errors - probable malware..) on another site, however it is a little bit beyond me as i do not have the windows XP installer disks. Any help is very much appreciated!!! Thanks guys, Cookaboy
  4. Hi net_surfer. I appreciate the reply and thankyou for welcoming me to the site. You see my problem is exactly the same as what dustybin had in the way this msls52.dll file is missing and therefore the whole computer will not get past login. It seems from what I have tried to find out that this is a malware problem? The post i linked to from another site was in regards to booting from a booting utility CD (i do not have the XP install disks), in order to change the extension to some files that contained the txt 'msls52.dll' and restore the computer to normal. Do you have any ideas or alterior solutions? Thanks! Sorry if I am confusing in anyway but this is all a little bit beyond me.:)
  5. Hi, I am also having the exact same problem as dustybin had. I do not have the install disk for windows xp either as it was alrady installed when I purchased the laptop from the store. What do you suggest I do please? I did find this blog (Security Forums :: View topic - LSASS errors - probable malware..) however I do not understand what the user means when he talks about ' ubcd4win'. Please help! Much appreciated. Cookaboy
