  1. Many thanks Mike. I'll give them a go. :)
  2. Hi, In Firefox there is a command "about:config" that allows you to change all manner of settings. Does anyone know if there is a similar command in Google Chrome?. I regularly make changes to the search functions but they expire as soon as I close the browser.
  3. Thanks. I'll see if I can locate the CMOS battery and replace it. Will have to wait until next week now as I'm working until then. :(
  4. No beeps, no sound whatsover except a half second sound of a fan. I've taken the thing to pieces since i last posted but it's made no difference. I tried all the things KenB suggested but nothing. I reckon it's time for that laptop docking station in the sky :)
  5. Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook S6120, Pentium Centrino 1.6 mhz, 512m ram, Windows XP Prof. Graphics card on board. Pretty standard machine. I have also tried a different HDD with a Win 7 OS but this made no difference whatsoever.
  6. Thanks for the replies. What do you mean by a full system spec? I tried a few things last night and now when i switch it on it has a one second burst of starting then nothing. I did all the other things with the memory and battery/mains but to no avail.
  7. I turned my laptop on today but halfway through start up the screen went blank and the fan started going full speed. I turned it off via the start/stop button and after a few minutes turned it on again. This time there was nothing at all except a fan going full speed. I thought it might be an OS problem so decided to take the opportunity to upgrade to Windows 7 but then saw there was no light on the CD Rom drive. I opened it manually and tried to boot from the CD but no go. I'm thinking BIOS, possibly dead battery but would appreciate another opinion before I take it to pieces, not as easy as a PC :(. Should mention I have removed and replaced the memory modules, tried a different HDD. There are no beeps from the m/board and trying to enter set up doesn't work. Thanks.
  8. Thanks DSTM, i'll give that a try.
  9. Is anyone else experiencing problems with Google Chrome lately? Just lately I have been getting frozen pages and when eventually I can get into task manager the cpu is running at 100% which is nearly all Chrome. I am not getting any problems with Firefox so it's obviously Chrome. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling it but to no avail.
  10. All sorted. She bought a screen off ebay and it now seems ok. Thanks for the help :)
  11. Yes, I appreciate it's a difficult one but I was hoping against hope there might be a known weakness.I'll have to wait until she brings it up for me to have a look at. Thanks anyway.
  12. My daughters laptop screen works for about one minute but then goes very dim. She says she can just about make out what is on the screen if she tilts it at an angle. She says that an IT "expert" where she works changed the light source but that made no difference. Until I actually see the laptop I can't even say if the source is working. Any thoughts until then please? Thanks.
  13. sorry, somehow my last message got attached to someone elses problem. I'll post it as a new one :(
