I had this problem too: I was already using another monitor with my PC, which has a DVI connection. Before I plugged in the hp monitor, I should have gone into the BIOS & switched over to the onboard graphics to use the vga connector, which is what the hp monitor uses. So my PC was expecting a connection from a DVI monitor.
