  1. Hello, It is definitely a legitimate copy as I said in my above post and I know by looking at it. Well, it looks like the real thng and I was told it is. The guy uses a newer version of windows now. They knew I needed it to install windows and I have the product key. I'd like to install it myself that is why I am here. I do I go about doing that please?
  2. Hello Frank and Nev's thankyou for your replies, just getting on line now ...... To answer your questions. 1. I think it would have been the windows XP Professional edition as I would have looked at properties on the computer at the time of stating this, joining this forum. 2 and 3. Yes there is a microsoft stick on the comp, it has Windows XP Home Edition with the letters. The code is 12345 XXXXX XXXXX XXXXX XXXXX(I don't think it has purpose with my comp now) 4. The disk I have just recently acquired is from someone else but it's NOT a dodgy disk they just don't need it any longer and I have the code for that. I don't think this disk is the correct one for the os I have installed at present now that you mention it and I've checked. I have answered all your questions as I wasn't sure what exactly you were looking for in all the info, so I'm just playing it safe but just to tell you the guy who sorted my comp not that long ago used his own disk. I've never had a disk with this comp as I bought it from somone else a year and a half ago. Thankyou to you both and I hope this helps.
  3. Thankyou for that Frank. I've taken the cd out the drive and entered the BIOS but when I select to boot from CD ROM then it just goes to another screen quickly and then onto the safe mode etc. screen. Any thoughts? I have been told in the past I need a new hard drive but other people have able to re-install windows etc. and this normally lasts me for 2/3 months. It does for now.... :)
  4. Hiya Frank, I will try that after my tea, thanks again for replying but I just want to ask.... Is it possible to back up information saved when I can't access it at the minute. I do already have it backed up on my usb's but I'm just curious. Assuming I hadn't already back them up on my usb would I have been able to something else? Just interested to know! Thanks again.
  5. Hello Frank, so sorry I've taken my time to get back to you but I've been unwell and getting net access isn't always easy. To answer your questions.... I think the screen came with the tower. I can't see anything on the tower but on the back of the screen it says it's make is Sony and the model is SDM-E76D. I hope this is right. I think I am managing to get into the BIOS screen. I have the win Xp disc in at time of booting comp and I get the screen Press TAB to show POST screen, DEL to ent SETUP, ESC to Enter Boot Menu. I press ESC I then get... =Select a Boot first device= Floppy +Hard Disk CD Rom (I select the CD Rom) then it has - Press any key to boot from CD (if don't do this then it takes me back to safe mode etc screen. I press a key and then a blue screen comes up saying at the top Windows Setup and at the bottom. .... Setup is loading files and then it says Setup is starting windows. Then on the blue screen it says at top Windows XP Home Edition Setup (in the body of the screen) Welcome to setup. This portion of the setup program prepares Microsoft ® Windows ® XP to run on your computer. - To set up Windows XP now, press Enter - To repair a Winows XP installation using Recovery Console press R - To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, Press F3 I have been beyond this screen and I have selected bot Enter and R but I just get stuck.
  6. By make and model - I have Intel Celeron D. Is this what you are asking? Yes I do have a an operating system disk - Windows XP - Are we on the same line here? I've went into the recovery section into the start section and then recovery. I've tried both ways. The bios, I think you mean is the command screen? I go into the blue screen and then the black screen. I get into this when the system is trying to boot and I safe mode etc coming up and it rolls bringing up lots of word ... petition.... etc. It runs up the screen and then it goes to another screen and at the bottom it has 3 options and choose from and I press the Esc button to get into read from CD option. Also, what do you mean by my cd/dvd drive set in the boot order? Sorry to have went on but I'm not a techy person and tihis is all new to me... hopefully slowly learning. Thankyou for showing interest in helping me.
  7. I'm desperate for help. I'm either trying to re-install windows or use windows recovery. I've tried fixmbr and fixboot codes (as I've searched the net) but nothing is happening I still can't get past the first part.... safe mode etc. I just can't get to the windows on my computer. Please help as I desperate to get my computer working.
  8. I've tried the disk but I'm stuck.... When the screen runs through that safe mode etc. and also goes on the screen which says at the bottom Press Tab to show past screen, Del to enter setup, Esc to enter boot menu I opt for Esc. (I take it this is right?) When it gets to part where it says select R for Recovery console setup, I select R. It's the following part I'm stuck on and this is what it says: - Microsoft Windows XP Recovery Console The Recovery Console provides system repair and recovery functionality. Type Exit to quit the Recovery Console and restart the computer c (it's a c command thing but I can't remember exactly what the symbols were after it) As I didn't know what to do, I initialy opted for that chkdsk command but then the command thing just kept coming up. Then when I tried again I opted for the Exit command as I was thinking that maybe if it shut down and restart just like when you download some software that this would maybe work some how. Basically none of this has worked and I'm not sure what to do next. Please help?
  9. Hello Seedy21, I just want to say thanks for your help and I haven't forgotten this forum. My comp has just went again now and that is me just coming on to get all details from another comp. I have the corrected code chkdsk and the details written down, so I'lll come back and let you know how I got on.
  10. Yeah, I'm away to get Windows XP cd from a friend to keep. This is for installing the windows. So, I take it the recovery part will or should be on that cd? I'm getting it on Wednesday, so will it be ok just to put it in my computer just to have a look for the recovery section even though my windows are fine at the min. I'm assuming the disk check is the area that you opt to go back in time to when the system was working ok. Is that right?
  11. Hiya Seedy. I've done a search of the machine but can't see any serial nums etc. Will go and have another look but I did have a thorough look. I have no idea what the chasis number is. On the system info I have this : - Computer: Intel® Celeron® CPU 3.20GHz 3.19 GHz 1.43 GB of RAM Physical Address Extension Is that of any good? It has been said to me it is maybe a harddrive problem. I do realise I will need to see about getting it replaced at some point when I have the dosh. For the mean time I'm looking to find out how I get back into the system again. Had a couple of guys doing it but they have not always been reliable hence the reason I would just prefer to know how to do it myself. Do you know what I would do if this happens to me again?
  12. No there is nothing in the cd drive. The problem I am getting is happening every 2 to 3 months. I'm never able to click on safe mode etc. and just get back into using my comp again. Plus where do I find the make and model of my comp? It's a Sony it's got it below the screen. On the tower it's - Hi Grade. Am I on the right lines here?
  13. Hiya, I just joined last night seeking the forums help. Sorry if I posted before seeing my email account. Hope I've posted enough info and in the correct topic. If not just give me a slap and direct me to where I should post it. ta
  14. Hello, my comp has just been fixed but I'd like to sort it myself infuture as this is a recurring problem and costing me. Sometimes my computer comes up 1) Boot from cd then on the next screen 2) Safemode, Normal Mode etc. When I do select any of them or just let the computer roll then it goes back to - Boot from cd. Normally this results in everything being re-installed again but I'd like to know what I select to get out of - boot from cd/safe mode etc problem to allow me to reinstall windows or whatever I have to do the next time this happens. I'm looking for step by step advice on how to do this. I have heard of them going back in time on the computer to when it was working. I'd like to know how to sort this myself for the next time it happens. I've been told it could be a problem with the hardware. 2nd problem - Windows have been re-installed but I can't find the volume. I can't hear anything. Am I allowed to ask where I can get a free on line driver for the sound (Windows XP Professional). I'd like to hear the videos too. Learner but keen.
