  1. KB you rock "the workaround" worked for me...so far. I deleted the upper and lower filters in the registry key and voila...D was recognized as a drive. Thanks for the link dude. THE RAT
  2. My bad - I thought computers did everything The reason for replacement was the faceplate for the drive never existed (bought this used). I was opening the tray with a paper clip. It was getting old. I bought a gig of ram and (replaced a 256 mb chip) I bought this dv8000 a year ago used and it had the Windows 7 operating system already in it. I DID NOT UNINSTALL THE DRIVERS (RIGHT AWAY) meaning once my problems cropped up I went into control panel / device manager and uninstalled all dvd/cd drivers then restarted (several times) Here is a more accurate description of exactly what waht down. I just replaced my hp dv8000 laptop dvd/cd drive with another drive from a dv8000. On reboot drive software install failed. In control panel HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GMA-4082N ATA device shows device status" This device cannot start. (Code 10) and also in device manager under other devices subcatagory mass storage controller an orange triangle that never appeared before...device status The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28). Sounds like some lind of conflict from hell but I have no Idea what the other device/mass storage controller is referring to. Thanks ... the Rat
  3. Pieter, Close but I have a dead HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GMA-4082N ATA Device and am running windows 7 ultimate...and the windows link did not work. (apples and oranges maybe?) My problem occured after replacing another dvd/cd drive in my HP DV8000 laptop. Before the installation I had no conflicts in my device manager, birds were singing...but once I installed the cd drive I had two warning triangles. One under my DVD/CD ROM DRIVES (This device cannot start. (Code 10)...and another triangle under OTHER DEVICES sub MASS STORAGE CONTROLLER. The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) It sounds like some twilight zone conflict but only my dvd/cd does not work. If you or anyone out there has a clue what is happening with my machine...any help would be appreciated. The weird thing is...the dvd/cd is from another DV8000 (or so I was told) Thanks
