  1. Arggh! Time to bite the bullet. :( I, too, am guilty of avoiding updates because they always want to throw SP3 into the soup. Some years ago SP2 created massive problems for me. Hopefully, as someone said, SP3 has the bugs worked out by now. I went to Wolfey's link and read up on the details. No mention was made of first removing SP2. Do I just leave that and add SP3 to the mix? Also, the above description mentioned "What Others Are Downloading" and listed 5 -- among them: Microsoft.Net Framework 3.5. Is it a good idea to download those too?
  2. I've just bought 2 new identical PC's with XP pro installed. Both Cre 2 Duo with 250GB HD and 2GB mem. Both are running ok but whilst one has accepted SP3 from a CD I burned from the .iso, the other will not install SP3 either from the CD or from windows update site. Neither will it install Update for Windows XP (KB898461) and Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1. I've also tried to install IE7 and again no joy with this one machine. The other is fine. Any ideas? Many thanks, Bob.
  3. Just to let everyone know, SP3 for WinXP is coming through when you do a manual Windows Update. I just performed a restore of WinXP from the recovery partition on a Dell Laptop which included SP2. Then I manually ran Windows Update and it downloaded one large SP3 file. SP3 installed with no problems, HOWEVER, I had to go back and get about 4 more updates. SP3 does not include Explorer7. Then one of the updates failed to install !!!! Fortunately the error code and help links at the Update page led me to the fix. I had to open a cmd prompt and re-register about 8 DLLs to fix the problem. After that, the last update installed properly. That's the latest news on SP3. :) ---pete---
