  1. Hello! I have an old notebook with Windows XP pro, german, 32-bit, 40 GB Harddisk and 512 or 1024 MB RAM (can't remember right now; but I know that more RAM is not supported by the BIOS and/or motherboard). I would like to give it to the child of a friend in Thailand - but as I have a german version of XP I would like to know if and how I (legally!) may change to a thai or english version of XP. I want to reinstall the notebook here at home with that thai or english XP-version (or mayby install the german XP pro I got and the apply e. g. language-files to switch to english or thai), with a free virus-protection and some more software (e. g. my old Office 2000 pro - but which is in german too). I'd rather not buy a XP-'licence' in Thailand as they often are illegal copies - and moreover at least hardware and presumably software is sometimes more expensive than here in Germany! Thank you! 3. I'd had Vista 64-bit installed for about two years, with lots of driver and software updates and some hardware added during that time, all Windows updates, SP1, Windows Search 4.0, IE8, very few issues, and installed SP2 from Windows Update. After installing SP2 I noticed when opening Computer (folder) from a shortcut in Quick Launch, the 1.44 floppy disk drive light would randomly flash and make its noise, when it had never done that prior to installing SP2. The floppy drive isn't used much, and after a few weeks of observing I hadn't worked out why it did it when it did, and didn't do it if the "Devices with Removable Storage" group was collapsed, but might if that group was expanded after opening Computer. It's a minor but annoying problem. So, I tried a clean new install of Vista SP1 (DVD) without Windows Updates, drivers or software installed afterwards and there was no floppy problem when opening Computer. Then installed the standalone SP2 and afterwards the floppy problem started again, and no other Windows Updates, drivers or software had been installed. After setting up the system, installing drivers and software, another few weeks, and without using the floppy drive, it was still happening randomly. For the time being I've used gpedit.msc to hide A (and style_emoticons//cool.gif drives in Computer and Explorer as a workaround, even though kinda inconvenient. Does anyone know what the problem is, how to fix it without hiding the floppy drive in Computer, seen or heard of it in Vista (SP2)? -- Rom
  4. Under DESKTOP\My Documents... I have many folders. The "My Pictures" folder which has many folders and filed beneath it does NOT give me the option to change the icon; in other words, the 'cuctomize' tab under properties in "My Pictures" is NOT there! Can anyone assist me in changing the appearance of this 1 icon? Thanks, FLKulchar
  5. I've got a Treo 755P telephone and all I want to do is be able to email a photo I took with it to a friend. I've got the most recent version of Palm's Desktop software installed on my computer and downloaded the photo into it. But when I then subsequently try to email it, it tells me I don't have a MAPI client installed. I had migrated from Outlook Express some time ago due to a file corruption to Live Mail but was unhappy with it for multiple reasons and ultimately found my way to Thunderbird, which is what I use today for ordinary email. So now it looks like I need some sort of MAPI client. I doubt I'd use it for any other purpose other than this since I've gotten along fine without one essentially since the days of DOS 5.1. But I don't want to spin my tires. What should I install? I have a copy of Office 2005 installed if that makes any difference. I didn't bother installing Outlook at the time as all I wanted was Word, Excel and Power Point. Would Outlook be what I need? Jay
  6. When I start Windows it loads up (I can see the wallpaper, but no icons or taskbar). But then logs out and takes me to the Windows login screen (which I never used to see, before as there is only one user on my PC). click on the one and only icon and it begins to log me in and then immediately says, "Logging Out - saving personal settings". Whenever I try and login the same problem happens over and over, it attempts to loads up and then automatically logs out. I have tried starting Windows in safe mode and 'last known good configuration'. With the exact same problem. Tried logging in safe mode with the command prompt and it spawns the situation above with one additional item on the page - an administrator user login icon. When I hit the admin icon, same situation above. And, obviously, I do not get the command prompt I ask for. I have no operating system discs since the computer came from DELL. The only disc I have is the Drivers and Utilities disc. This problem started after I completed two tasks (which I was doing simultaneously) 1) defraging hard drive using Nortons Optimization tool, and 2) removing items from the start-up menu, again directed to that screen through Norton.
  7. Hi On my WinXP Pro I have an administrator account and a regular account. I am able to do anything under "C:\Program Files" with the administrator account but when I try to create a new folder with the regular account I get the message "Unable to create folder 'New Folder' Access is denied" the owner of "C:\Program Files" is "Administrators" Is there a way of enabling my regular account to create folders and files under "C:\Program Files" without making him an administrator ? thanks
  8. My homepage is still showing the FATHER'S DAY logo from June 21st! If I click on 'images' and go back to 'web' it clears, but every time I go directly to Google as my homepage it comes back with the bluddy sandcastles! Any ideas, please?
  9. Is there a way to make it so that when you browse in Windows Explorer, it will only show folders/files whose names meet certain criteria? Let me explain: we are running a company application that creates Job Folders under a master directory on the server. The master directory is called "Images", and when a job is created at one of our company locations, the program creates a folder for that job that has a sequential number and appends the first initial of the location to the newly created folder. So--for our Norfolk location, it creates a folder called "N (job number), for our Omaha location: "O (job number)" etc. I would like it to be so that when our Norfolk location, for example; goes into the master "Images" folder they will only see the folders that have the "N" prefix and not all the folders for our other locations. This would make it much simpler for them to find things (there are currently over 14,000 entries in the master "Images" folder from all of our locations). All our users are using XP SP3. If there is a way to "customize" the view in Windows explorer per the above requirements, I would appreciate any advice on how to do it! Do I need to perhaps purchase something third-party to do this?
  10. Is there a freeware/lowcost software to add Remote Desktop to XP Home? I just realized three of mine are XP Pro and one XP home which does of course have remote desktop and that is the one I want to have the ability to be able to access. Thank You
  11. Is there any way, from a command prompt, to pop up a message in Windows that will simply display a message, then disappear after a set period of time? Thanx.
  12. After I minimize the RealPlayer window, I cannot restore the window later by clicking on the icon in the bar at the bottom of the desktop. It seems to move as if to restore, but the window that was open remains open. I can find RealPlayer by minimizing all the other windows I have open. -- Gianni
  13. Thank you for posting your problem and solution. Excellent post. In combination with the following site I made it to solve this problem too style_emoticons//smile.gif 'The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Launch permission for the COM Server application' (http://www.itexperience.net/2008/03/29/eve...er-application/) -- itexperience ------------------------------------------------------------------------ itexperience's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/67359.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/windows-x64-edition/754746.htm http://forums.techarena.in

Before, I had the capability of printing to an "XPS"--Windows Document Writer--file. Now, I can't. How do I restore this capability? Regards, Merlyn

  20. I have windows xp professional on my laptop and the time jumbs forward ~5 minutes for ~15 seconds and then backwards. It happens a lot; once every ~55 minutes. I have no idea why this happens! I hope you have an answer for this problem... My time zone is Jerusalem (GMT+02:00) and the "Automatically adjust clock for daylight saving changes" option is checked.
  21. This may not be the best group to post this in, but ..... Windows 7 comes out 10/22. Probably not news to anyone (especially here). From now until July 11th, a few places are participating in a Microsoft "pre-order" program where you can buy a copy at a VERY steep discount (50% to 70% off; $49 for the $119 Home Premium Upgrade, for example). Ships on 10/22. So I went to www.BestBuy.com/Windows7preorder to place an order, and there are two SKU's ... Home Premium and Business. Shouldn't there be four SKUs? -Home Premium 32-bit -Home Premium 64-bit -Business 32-bit -Business 64-bit ??? [Or does each package possibly include both, but you can use one or the other?]
  22. Hi, I have upgraded my ASUS M2N-E with its AD1988B to a faster CPU (AMD 9950 quad) and faster Graphic card (Geforce 9600GT). I also had to update the BIOS to the latest to support the faster CPU. Since then, I can not play sound (MP3 files, radio stream) correct under Win XP (it works under Win7 - dualboot ;-)). It does not matter what player I use to play, its always the same. The sound is like there are scratches on a CD. Every about 5 to 10 seconds the sound kinda 'jumps'/'hangs'. I deinstalled and reinstalled the driver with no success. Any ideas? Thanks Franz
  23. I activated yesterday and was greeted as having completed this. Now, this morning, I was told that "This pre-release version will expire in three days". I rummaged around a bit and clicked on something and the activation gave me the O.K. again. Now, a few hours later, the message is back saying it will expire in three days. Is this a known issue that can be ignored? Tony. . .
  24. I have WindowsXP Home SP3 and use Outlook Express for my emails. When emailing a photo from "My Pictures" folder I click on "E-mail this file" in the "Picture Tasks" column on the left . This would then show a window asking me if I want to make the picture smaller before taking it to my OE for emailing. I have often used this option in the past however it has now disappeared and when I click on "Email this file" it takes it directly to my OE. Can anyone help me with this please?
  25. > I notice that in MSconfig under Services there are several items > (Microsoft) that are checked on the left but say they are stopped on the > right. Without checking each one in Services to see if they are on > Automatic, Manual or Disabled would it be accurate to assume that it > doesn't matter if MSconfig settings and Services "match"? Does either > override the other? I rarely hear of people discussing these 2 programs > together but it looks like they are quite intertwined. And I wonder why > more Services don't show up in MSconfig? And is there a better choice > than Services to control what's running in the background? (Using XP > Pro, SP3 with latest updates.) If a service is disabled it will not appear in msconfig > services tab. Services that are reported as stopped in msconfig may be set as automatic or manual in the Services console. Not all services that are set to automatic or manual are always running, services run when a request is made for them, otherwise they sit quietly listening for the call to run. Again, as I have always stated and stand firm by: One should only use msconfig as a tool for troubleshooting, it should not be used as a permanent tool to disable any application, process and/or service. Once an application, process and/or service has been determined as the possible cause of any issue, that application, process and/or service should be disabled by other means. Ways to disable and/or stop any application, process or service will vary depending on the type of application, process or service. -- Brian A.
