Re: SP3 Fails to install FATAL: UH: 0x8024200b:

Well, I put my XP through a series of tests:

Notepad - OK

3 types Browsers - OK

AOL - OK

Folding At Home - OK

MS Word - OK

Performance test 6.1 - OK

CPU & memory tests - OK

Probably something broken in there, but will wait a few months to try

it again

Nice day outside, will take a walk . .

That is NOT the final SP3.

Get the latest directly from Microsoft.

It is also available as a CD ISO image, in addition to the automatic

updates. Using the CD image will help eliminate some problems that might

occur during the automatic update process.

Re: SP3 Fails to install FATAL: UH: 0x8024200b:

A few follow-up notes:

1. The ISO image is 544 Meg. It downloaded for me in about 13 minutes on a

cable modem.

2. To get the image onto a CD, do NOT copy&paste or drag&drop or similar.

Use software that supports burn-from-image. Both Nero and Easy CD Creator

can do this.

3. Before installing, run CHKDSK /F on C: and reboot the PC. Wait until

all disk activity has stopped, possibly as much as a minute after you see

the XP logo. Turn off all user programs, turn off antivirus, turn off

GOBACK (if you have it). Be sure that you have at least 1 Gig of free space

on C:; you won't need all of that, but better to have some extra room than

not enough.

4. Install SP3. Reboot. Then, run XP update to get post-SP3 patches.

5. Rerun CHKDSK /F on C: and reboot.

6. Run defrag.

7. Share the SP3 CD with friends. That will save them from having to

download and burn it. After all, it is offered free to anyone who wants it.
