loljack Posted May 21, 2011 Posted May 21, 2011 So, after fixing our family's virus ridden computer, and making it work a treat, it now freezes at the start up screen (the little blue bar just stops) I can work on it in safe mode with networking, and I had a look at some of the things I installed for it to work. My guess is that it's the graphics card. I install the driver, make it work, computer reboots, that happens. I go into safe mode, disable it and use the intergrated, it works fine. Well, fine for a computer using intergrated. My graphics card is a HD Radeon 4650, ATI Radeon HD 4650 - Graphics Cards - Peripherals - Reviews - PC & Tech Authority, on of those old AGP powerhorse things. Anyway, we got it from a computer technician, who sold it to us, and installed it. The fact is, the graphics card requires 400W to run. Having a look at our CPU, the max output is 250W. Could that be why? Also, when I try to run the Catalyst Control Center for my graphics card WHILE IN SAFE MODE, I get this message 'could not load file or assembly 'sorttbls.nlp' or one of its dependencies catalyst'. Turns out the 'sorttbls.nlp' is part of .NET framwork 2. So I installed all of that again, about five times, while using the intergrated graphics. Seeing as I only get that message in safemode, I'm just assumming that .NET framework doesn't work in safemode. I'd really appreciate your help guys. But just to recap, because this has been an awfully confusing post, my problem is that: My computer freezes at the boot up screen for XP Pro, while using my graphics card. Quote
RandyL Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 I think it's having trouble loading the Catalyst Control Center. This might be due to your seriously underpowered PSU, a bad card or the Catalyst Control Center software. Try reinstalling the software. Uninstall the software and install just the drivers. Try your card in another computer. Try a better PSU. Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. loljack Posted May 22, 2011 Author Posted May 22, 2011 So, buy a new PSU? I updated .NET framework, and the error message doesn't come up anymore, it just doesn't load Catalyst (In safe mode). How do I find out what type of PSU it is? Quote
RandyL Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 Safemode just loads the basic drivers and software needed to make Windows, hardware and some programs work. This includes basic graphics drivers which is why the picture looks the way it does. I did misread your post slightly. Does the computer boot up normal now? If so I would say you solved your problem. As for the PSU if your computer functions normally I would still upgrade the PSU. Forgive me for my confusion. Quote We are all members helping other members. loljack Posted May 22, 2011 Author Posted May 22, 2011 Nah, you didn't, it can only boot in safe mode. Our friend is giving us a 300watt PSU, which is still nowhere near enough, but hopefully it'll let it run. Quote
playsmartcasino Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 This is the common problem with the window xp,There are lots of windows user have this kind of problem,a while ago i had the same issue where the scroll bar would freeze up during startup and prevent booting my computer. then when i restated it windows would "apolagize for the inconvenience". i used to get around this by using the xp cd to repair my damage EVERYTIME this happened. problem was, it happend regularly. so most of the timewhen i startup windows i would simply rely on luck that it wouldn't freezeup. but later the problem got much worse so i took it into the computer store and they told me i had a faulty graphics card (Due to improper updating). it cost me $50 which was lower than what i's expected so that was good.
