Will 768MB RAM be OK, even in Safe Mode?

Re: Will 768MB RAM be OK, even in Safe Mode?

LOL! Like minds, and all...

I dunno, I'm just as confused as Angus, now, though in the case of

Crucial.com, they have an excellent no-hassle return policy, so I'd be

tempted to say that each slot can hold a max of 1GB of 2700, or 3200, for a

total of 3GB of either (pretty much all that 32-bit Windows can use,

anyway). That would have to be single-sided RAM there at Crucial.

But is there for sale out there any double-sided DDR 2700 or 3200, for that

machine?

Re: Will 768MB RAM be OK, even in Safe Mode?

It's confusing, but I don't think double-sided means double-banked any longer, these

days. I recall something about checking if there is a trace on the PCB at a

particular pin # on the RAM stick that connects it to another pin on the other side,

which has to do with whether it is single or double "banked".....but I may be

totally wrong.

Also, it appears they now use "ranked"? See the "Ranking" section here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIMM

Now I'm confused too.....hmmm, I know, I'll go to bed.

This is quite reassuring. Now that Crucial have processed the RMA

for the 1GB DIMM I foolishly ordered before even stopping to think

whether there might be a problem with Win98SE (!), I'll go ahead

and order another 256MB DIMM, see how it goes, and report back.

That's bollocks! I did nothing of the kind. (It's a short thread,

The following old thread called into question whether a Win98

safe-mode start was identical to a Win95 safe-mode start:

"Starting applications automatically in safe mode":

http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion/browse_thread/thread/91dd0b2e108df33e/4bd163c6210510fc?#4bd163c6210510fc

Among other things, the OP claimed that "Shell and Drivers lines are

NOT executed in safe mode".

I haven't tested this myself, though (because safe mode makes a mess

of my desktop settings, among other things). I did try adding a

semicolon to the beginning of the "shell=explorer.exe" line in

system.ini. However this made no difference to a normal boot, ie

Explorer still started up as the default shell.

I see even back then you were wary of Safe Mode, Zabcar, (although I can

almost swear you said you tried it & it worked in that thread). ANYHOW,

I changed to "Shell=Winfile.exe" in System.ini, [boot] section. A reboot

to Safe Mode INDEED opened into Winfile, which I used to revert to

Shell=Explorer.exe (File menu, Run, SysEdit). When I exited Winfile, I

got a message it was "safe to turn off the computer", where normally it

would shut on its own. (I couldn't see how to do a reboot.) My Desktop

icons weren't mussed this time-- because there were none behind Winfile

in Safe Mode.

SO... I guess it's the same in Win98 as in Win95 for that.

WARNING: Careful with Winfile, because it doesn't understand LFNs (Long

File Names).

If you only go up to 1GB, all you have to do is add MaxFileCache=512000

under the [vcache] header of the System.Ini file.

This only limits the addressable ram, not how much of the ram that can be

used.

I use 1GB on my Win98SE with no problem and it really helped out my gaming.

The above takes only about <1min then reboot and you are set.

To do it, just go Start,Run and type in System.ini and press Enter.

Scroll down to the [vcache] header and put the MaxFileCache=512000 line in

below it.

Reboot. Presto, you're done.

PS: Even with 768MB of ram, you should put that line in. :)
