Guest Andrew Wan Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 I have Windows XP SP2, with firefall enabled. I was previously infected with a virus that prevented me from accessing hotmail, yahoo mail, gmail, or even windows live mail. Also could not use MSN Live Messenger (however was able to use Trillian). AVG detected the trojan horse and quarantined it. But I still can't access my hotmail. I even tried installing SP3 but that didn't help. Anyone know of this issue and how to solve?
Guest Rey Santos Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 RE: prevented me from accessing hotmail If you are blocking cookies try accepting them. In IE< go to Tools, select Internet Options, go to the Privacy tab, click Advanced and set cookies to Accept and see if you can get in. Note, some firewalls have their own cookie blocking features and might override those settings so if you have a firewall, you might want to disable it when trying to access these sites. Also, on the Privacy tab, click Sites button and be sure none of the sites that had to do rith MSN or MSN Messenger or MSN Hotmail or sites you are visiting are set to block or always block. In the Security Tab under" Security level for this zone" hit "Reset all zone to default level button" to set the security level to normal. Try it again. If you have Spybot Search and Destroy installed the page may fail because its IE bad URL blocking feature (SDHelper), is preventing access to some of the ads run on the Hotmail pages. You can confirm this by changing the "Resident IE" option (right click on the "Spybot-SD Resident" icon in the systray) to "Display dialog when blocking". If you then refresh the Hotmail page it might fail to load and with the changed setting above you'll get a dialog saying something like access to a Doubleclick or AvenueA URL has been blocked. This is something new and I suspect that it has to do with a changed advertising policy of Hotmail whereby if you block the ad you don't get the page. -- Rey "Andrew Wan" wrote: > I have Windows XP SP2, with firefall enabled. > > I was previously infected with a virus that prevented me from accessing > hotmail, yahoo mail, gmail, or even windows live mail. Plug the name of the virus or trojan horse you got into Google and do some research on a complete cure. If you didn't note its name, look in AVG's logs, quarantine area, etc. It's fairly important.
