I have a desktop running Windows XP and a laptop running Windows 7. My modem/router is a D-Link DSL-G604T. The laptop is connected wirelessly. I cannot get the two systems to access each other although they can both access the internet. The desktop sees the laptop but tells me it is not accessible and that I might not have permission to use this network resource. I would like to be able to share files and get the laptop to access the printer connected to the desktop by USB. I have enabled sharing of all the folders and the printer I wish to share. I have tried the various networking wizards on both machines to no avail. Any help?

Hi.

If I remember right you have to change the security on the folder you want to share in Windows 7.

Navigate to the folder Documents, right click it and select properties.

Click on the Security tab.

Click Edit.

Click Add.

Type in the word Everyone.

Click OK.

Click Apply and/or OK as needed.

G'day RandyL,

Did as you advised but still the same. I think I will put this in the too hard basket as I am also a little concerned that I have an insecure network connection and I don't understand hexadecimal digits to create WEP connection. Many thanks to you for taking up your time.

I just thought of something else. I had to disable my Mcafee suite to set it up because it manages connections. Then I had to allow the network connection in my Mcafee settings. Much like you I could see it but not access it.

Networking XP and Win 7

Found an excellent Guide on the internet

'Ed's Guide to Home Networking' by Ed McAuliffe'

By using his guide I have networked my desktop running XP and two laptops running Win 7. I highly recommend this guide as it covers all aspects of networking in easy to understand sections.
