Giles Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 Hi All, Need your advise with my wireless connection. I have done a search and found out there are alot of problem with the Atheros AR9285. However, wasn't able to solve my problem with the all solution given. I have just subscribe to Fibre Optic Broadband 100 mbps service and was give the HUAWEI HG256 Wireless Home gateway. Basically, there isn't any problem connecting directly using wired connection. D/L speed ard 90-99 mbps U/L speed ard 30-35 mpbs (tested using speedtest.net). However, I encounter problem connecting wirelessly using through my laptop. While connect using wireless connection, the wireless connection speed is only 65 mbps. D/L & U/L speed drop dramatically. Have done a search and my wireless adapter (Atheros AR9285 802.11B/G/N Wifi Adapter) can support up to 150 mpbs. http://www.speedtest.net/result/1312938801.png I do not know if i need to change any settings in other to get the ideal speed for D/L & U/L speed. Below are the specs of my laptop. http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee459/adzforce/Untitled3.jpg My Router Settings http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee459/adzforce/Untitled2.jpg My Wireless Connection Details. http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/ee459/adzforce/Untitled-1.jpg My Wireless Adapter Details. KenB Posted May 26, 2011 Posted May 26, 2011 Hi and welcome to ExTS Your signal quality is showing only 4 bars ( good ) and not 5 ( excellent ). Signal quality will affect the d/load speed. Try re-positioning the router. Take the laptop nearer to the router and see if this alters the quality. You could try changing the Channel. If a neighbour is using the same frequency this may affect your signal quality. At the moment yours seems to be set to Auto. Try Channel 7 or 11. You can always put it back to auto if you need to. Your Atheros AR9285 supports up to 150mbps. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! I have tried d/l & u/l test near my router, however the outcomes are almost the same. only reached 19mbps for d/l thru speedtest.net. I will try the method of changing the channel. change the channel only apply to my router setting right? do i need to change any setting on my wireless adapter? Quote
KenB Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 Change the channel settings from your router software. 192.168.1.1 will get you there from the address bar. Password = admin Username = admin You don't need to make any changes with the adapter. ( at least I don't ) You may wish to try this software: http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/download/ It will tell you what channel your neighbours are broadcasting on - you can then try a different one. Hi KenB, really appreciate you help very much. Below are the tests done before and after changing the channel. Channel remains as Auto. It seems that auto still gives me the best d/l speed. i have also tried cap locks the password but to no avail. KenB Posted May 27, 2011 Posted May 27, 2011 Do you have a cordless phone ? If so - try disconnecting the phone and try the d/l speed again. Disable the AntiVirus and Firewall. Run the Speedtest again. (remember to enable them again ) Results? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! KenB Posted May 28, 2011 Posted May 28, 2011 Is your signal quality on the laptop still 4 bars and not 5 ? Just point the screen curser at the monitor icon bottom right of screen. This will account for some of the discrepancy if it is not 5 bars. Run MBAM form here: http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html Remember to update it. Run it. It will create a log that may be needed later ( if it finds anything ). Malware can slow d/load speeds. KenB Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 I think I may have found your problem. Take a look in the Router software settings. Advanced > Basic > Wireless Lan I think you will find that there is a setting 802.11 b/g 802.11g supports bandwidth up to 54 Mbps and 802.11b is slower again. I don't think your router supports the speeds ( wirelessly ) that you are trying to attain. You need a router that supports 802.11n. This supports a bandwidth over 100Mbps. I think you need a router that supports 802.11n technology. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! KenB Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 I am now at a loss as to what to suggest. If I can think of anything else I will add it - hopefully somebody else here can jump in and come up with another suggestion. RandyL Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 Hi. This is not my field but I think Ken may be right. I'm not sure but all wireless routers may be limited due to the very nature of the wireless transmission technology. Although those ISP rates may be standard in some parts of the world like the UK places like where I live in the USA 6mb is standard for home users and under 50 for a hefty price. My point is there really is no incentive to offer technology that offers more. Now if you really want fast transfers with wired gigabyte is the way to go as it can deliver over 400 but that is hard wired. Gamers will swear by hard wired as it will be faster.
