User Profile Hive CleanUp

OS: WinXp Pro SP3.

Installed Profile Hive CleanUp service. It is shown in Add or Remove Program

panel as well as in Services (Local), Sysinternals Process Explorer and

Autoruns. However, in Windows Task Manager- Process tab -uphclean.exe does

not show; I thought it should. Am I wrong?

Is uphclean.exe running?

It is a service that you can see when typing "net start" at the Command

Prompt.

If it's not showing in the Task Manager's Processes list it isn't

running. Run the Services Management Console (enter services.msc in the

Start Menu | Run box) and see if the "User Profile Hive Cleanup" service

is running. You can start it there. The service should be set to

"Automatic" startup type.

Dunno, that's not part of Windows XP.

And don't cross post.

The Hive CleanUp service is an add-on to Windows - see here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=1B286E6D-8912-4E18-B570-42470E2F3582&displaylang=en

There is nothing wrong with cross-posting when done in

moderation (which the OP did) - see here:

http://www.blakjak.demon.co.uk/mul_crss.htm

The evil lies in multi-posting because it causes duplication

of effort. As far as I can see, the OP did not multi-post

his question.

Re: User Profile Hive CleanUp

It is, John. But it is definitely not showing in windows Task Manager.

Display name: User Profile Hive Cleanup

Description: Cleans up handles to allow unloading of user profile hive.

This can help speed up logging off, reconciliation of roaming profiles and

prevent exceeding the registry size limit.

Path to executable:

C:\Program Files\UPHClean\uphclean.exe

Startup type: Automatic

Service status: Started

"Services" are not "Tasks", hence they never show up in the Task Manager.

Hi YoKenny.

Since we can rule out the SP3 issue, any clues as to why uphclean doesn't

show up in my Task Manager Process list?

Please refer to my original post as well.

TIA

Okay then. But why is that YoKenny can see uphclean running in his Process

I'm not sure what you mean by that, Pegasus. Most started services show

up in the Task Manager's Processes list, maybe you were thinking of

something else?

Re: User Profile Hive CleanUp

OK, I did that.

I uninstalled and re-installed the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service and am

happy to report that uphclean.exe is showing in Windows Task Manager -

Processes panel (Admin Account).

However, when switching to the Limited User Account the entry is missing.

Please, how can I add uphclean.exe to Windows Task Manager - Processes panel

in Limited User Account?

Under limited, can you "see" SYSTEM processes? If not allowed, you won't

see uphclean.exe.

Here are a couple of typical services:

Help and Support

Windows Time

Neither of those will show up in the Task Manager. There are, of course,

some services that have an associated executable. The executable will

be visible in the Task Manager (and you might be able to kill it) but the

service won't.

I see what you mean. Some of hose would be run inside of Services.exe

or one of the svchost.exe.

Re: User Profile Hive CleanUp

Here is a complete list (ImageNames) as displayed in Windows Task Manager -

Processes tab (Limited User Account).

Image Name User Name

TimeZone.exe Ibex

egui.exe Ibex

MouseElf.exe Ibex

igfxpers.exe Ibex

MSASCui.exe Ibex

notepad.exe Ibex

explorer.exe Ibex

winlogon.exe SYSTEM

csrss.exe SYSTEM

taskmgr.exe Ibex

wlmail.exe Ibex

opera.exe Ibex

In Windows Task Manager - Processes tab (Admin Account) the Image Name/User

Name:

uphclean.exe SYSTEM is listed.

Does this mean that User Profile Hive CleanUp utility is running in both

Admin *and* Limited User accounts?

I would have thought that uphclean.exe would show in Windows Task Manager -

Processes tab (Limited User Account) as well.

Re: User Profile Hive CleanUp

Either that is an antiquated NT Resource Kit command line utility or

it's a third party utility, in any case it isn't a standard Windows XP

service and it isn't really relevant to the point that Pegasus made.

Why would you need to have this running on the machine?

TimeZone.exe has nothing to do with the Windows Time service.
