Command Prompt Here Help?

Sorry if this happens to be in the wrong forum. Please direct me to the

right one if that's the case. :frown:

I installed Winrar earlier today and when I right clicked on the rar

files, I was missing the extract menu options. "Extract here, extract

all." That kind of menu.

I searched on google to see if there was a resolution to this. I found

this website: 'Shell integration and Program Installations on 64-bit

Windows (XP and 2003 x64 Editions).'

It provided some sort of help. I tried it and in the file I downloaded

from this website was a CommandHere registry file. I followed the

instructions, but it wasn't too helpful. Now I have a "Command Prompt

Here" when I right click on files. Is there anyway to remove it?

I was afraid to do anything else in case I break the computer. D:

Click Start / Help, then look for help on "Associations". When

you know how to do it, change the association for .rar files to

the executable you wish to invoke. Alternatively you could re-install

WinRAR - it should set the correct association automatically.

Copy the below in notepad with a .reg extension and merge.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\Command Prompt Here]

@="Command &Prompt Here"

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\Command Prompt Here\command]

@="cmd.exe /k cd %1 "

See if this helps.

Go to Start -> Run and enter regedit.exe in the Open box.

In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following registry key by clicking on

the + signs in the left hand pane.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\Command Prompt Here

Right click on this registry key and select Delete from the menu.

If you're not comfortable editing the registry you can try using System Restore

to take your computer back to the state it was in before you ran that registry

fix.

Good luck

Thank you to everyone for the suggestion & help.

@Terry. R: I went to Add/Remove Programs, but that isn't on the list.

@Pegasus: XD I'm confused.

@Kelly: I read somewhere while I was trying to find a resolution to my

problems that what you mentioned adds that option to the menu.

 I'm not very knowledgeable with the computer functions. I

tried it anyway but it didn't work for me. ^^;; Thanks anyway.

@Nepatsfan: I entered regedit.exe and I got the popup window. When I

navigated to the destination you appointed me to, however that registry

key isn't there. D: I guess I'll try the system restore. I sure hope it

works.

Here's a simple suggestion.

Open winrar.exe.

Look at the top Menu and click Options then Settings.

On the Settings Window click Integration. Select whats appropriate

for you.

gud luck

Strange, It's usually in Add/Remove.

The registry hack Kelly suggested removes it, not adds it. Notice the

-HKEY in the line. You pasted the lines into Notepad, saved it as

"CMD.reg" (use the quotes), right click the file and selected Merge? It

may have saved as a TXT file if you have extensions hidden. Using the

quotes will force it to use REG.

@ Pegasus: ^^;; I'm a bit confused with what you were suggesting I do. I

opened the help window, but I could not find "Associations." I tried

typing it in the search bar, but eventually I realized I had no idea

what I was doing so I stopped that. XP

@ Terry R: Oh~ I see. As you can tell, I'm a total idiot when it comes

to these things. I followed the instructions you and Kelly gave me, but

it didn't solve the issue. Is it possible that it's in a different

directory?

@ Kos: When I uninstalled and reinstalled WinRar, I got the menu I

wanted. However if you had been here when I dealt with the dilemma in

the first place I would not have to deal with the stupid "Command

Prompt Here" menu. XP Thanks anyway. ^^

When you click Start / Help then you get to see a "Search" box

right up the top. In this box you type the word "association"

(without the double quotes) in order to see what help there is

on the technique used to associate a file with a certain program.

You then click the line "Change the program that opens a file"

to get detailed help.

If you're not familiar with Windows then it would be well worth

your while becoming familiar with the Help facility built into

Windows. There is a lot of very useful stuff in there!

@ Pegasus: Haha~ Oh. I get it now. XD Thank you for explaining in ...

simpler terms. I fixed the WinRar problem, I just can't figure out what

to do with the "Command Prompt Here" menu when I right click now.

Can't tell unless you tell us precisely what "right click now" means.

Remember - we can't see your screen!

That's from an MS power toy, and it's very useful. Basically, it appears

when you have right-clicked on a folder in Explorer. If you select it, it

will produce a command prompt using that folder as the current directory.

So, for a very simple example, if you right-click on teh windows\system32

folder and choose Command Prompt here, you'll get a command prompt at that

folder. And if you then type something like "dir /ah", you will view the

hidden files *in that folder*.

You're not an idiot, you're just inexperienced. It isn't installed in a

directory, it's a registry setting.

Really, if you can't remove the Command Prompt Here, it's not a big

deal. As Patrick described, it is very useful IF you ever use the

command prompt within folders. But it doesn't sound like you do. Why

it doesn't remove itself using the registry fix is strange. May have

something to do with the 64 bit version. It won't harm anything.

But you have back what you need so that's what's important!

Take care,
