Guest PPF Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 Re: Windows Defender I have a same problem. My system with Windows XP SP3. I tried other option like manual download but nothing works. I have tried the windows defender GUI with the same results. Microsoft update...same results. Manual Installer...no joy. My System has 512Mb of RAM and I have even tried killing as many processes as possible with no good results. I have also tried Safe mode. Is this a problem with this particular update file? Or is it a problem on my end? HELP!!!!!!
Guest PA Bear [MS MVP] Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 Re: Windows Defender I have reproduced this problem (error 0x80070643). Users may encounter this problem when updating Defender via Automatic Update, Windows Update, or from within Defender (Check for updates function). NB: Defender will NOT be happy and its "Alert!" icon will continue to appear in Notification Area until an update is successfully installed. This does NOT mean that Defender is not working/protecting your machine. I have alerted MS and the Defender team to this apparent bug via private channels. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ YoKenny wrote: > I have been unable to update Windows Defender to the latest definitions > since June 20th on my 512MB RAM XP Home nor 768MB RAM Pro systems. > > System Event log: > Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with > error 0x80070643: Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 > (Definition 1.35.716.0) > > Windows Defender has encountered an error trying to update signatures. > New Signature Version: 1.35.716.0 > Previous Signature Version: 1.0.0.0 > Update Source: User > Signature Type: AntiSpyware > Update Type: Full > User: IBMKS1\Ken Howey > Current Engine Version: 1.1.3604.0 > Previous Engine Version: 1.1.2204.0 > Error code: 0x80508007 > Error description: Your computer is low on memory. Guest JohnBurns Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Re: Windows Defender Thanks for alerting MS - I hope they realize MANY people are trying lots of things which are futile in trying to resolve this. I wish they would let us know what the problem really is - and how to fix it. "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote: > I have reproduced this problem (error 0x80070643). Guest PA Bear [MS MVP] Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Re: Windows Defender As John pointed out a few minutes ago, you can manually update Defender on 32-bit machines: 1. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/ADL.aspx 2. Click on the link on the left side of the page to download/install the new update. Do not use the link in the right-hand menu under "Latest Definition Updates". The linked download appears to be a re-release of definitions v1.35.563.0 which were originally released on 19 Jun-08. Installing it will make Defender "happy" again. <wink> -- ~PA Bear YoKenny wrote: > <JohnBurns>wrote: >> Thanks for alerting MS - I hope they realize MANY people are trying >> lots of things which are futile in trying to resolve this. Guest PA Bear [MS MVP] Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Re: Windows Defender Yep, by the time you sought the update you would've been offered v1.35.740.0 or greater.
