LAN disable - stops responding

Recommended Posts

Any idea why my XP LAN connection to my Linksys WAG354G (adsl

modem-router-wireless), becomes unresponsive when I right-click "Local Area

connection" in System Tray ? ...this problem recently appeared after

adjusting some (seemingly :-) unrelated bios settings.

Pondering on recent "changes" that could have caused it, ...the most recent

"adjustment" was to disable the Gaming Port in bios. So I went back into

bios and "enabled" it, and the above described effect / problem with LAN

connection goes away. ...so why would the gaming port bios switch cause a

problem with LAN connection to my router ?

Possibly of relevance :-

I've noticed that when XP (Home ed. SP3 ... all up to date), is loading up,

one of the several "system tray bubbles from AVG 8.0 internet security suite

| firewall" informs me that "Gaming Mode is disabled," obviously an option

I chose during installation of AVG. ...just to be clear, I don't play

games across the internet.

....during the past couple of weeks, I replaced 2x512mb Crucial ddr400/pc3200

memory modules out, for 4x Corsair XMS 512mb 3200LL modules, and with

brilliant help from Paul, in this NG, ...fathomed out the correct memory

....XP timings and other bios settings.

No other problems have occurred, ..i.e. this PC is "sweet as a nut," other

than the above described effect.

(after each reboot, PC is left for a good couple of minutes to fully settle,

....XP indexing ...Nero and other "indexing" is switched off, ...I keep any

eye on all "Startup" locations / items i.e. they are not stuffed full of

c**p ...for software that hardly ever gets used, ...I even switch off the

Norton Ghost service in XP services until I do a hd image !)

If Gaming Port is disabled in bios | System Tray LAN connection is

right-clicked and "disable" option is left-clicked, the LAN icon stays in

the tray "lit-up" and is no longer responsive e.g. to a right-click.

With gaming Port enabled in bios, (as it always has been btw - I just

thought I'd switch it off because it never gets anything plugged into it),

....there is not problem with LAN | Disable.

TIA for any clues,

regards, Richard

Do your UPNP settings match in your router and your bios?

They should both be OFF.

I would also recommend downloading and installing the latest firmware

from the linksys web site.

Many thanks, I will look into Upnp settings, and possibly reflashing Linksys

later today.

Re: LAN disable - stops responding

Many thanks for pointing me in the direction of Upnp. This does indeed

appear to be the "area" that was causing the problem.

I should perhaps have mentioned in my OP that my "modem/router" arrangement

is :-

Orange Livebox (Inventel DV4210-WU) as "front" router, and Linksys Wag354G

is connected to that, and is acting, (as I understand it), as a "dumb

router." ...but, even just outlining hardware and software setup, in case

it has a bearing on a problem seems to inevitibly turn into a NG post that

goes on forever and ever !!! (I'm good at that ! :-)

I checked in XP Services and Upnp is set to manual and has not been started

by anything*

Upnp in WAG354G is off.

Upnp in Livebox was on, so I turned it off.

Rebooted PC | entered bios settings and switched off the Gameport | booted

up, and LAN connection / LAN icon in system tray is now behaving properly.

i.e. when I right-click LAN icon in system tray to get its' pop out menu,

and click "disable," it now exits properly.

* whether or not, this will cause a problem with WAG354G sending internet to

WMP54G pci card in Dads' PC in the house, I won't know until I go in there

and try to use that PC. Ages ago I fought with that wireless connection and

seem to remember that Upnp had to be switched on to get that wifi connection

working, ...perhaps that was an erroneous conclusion. ...I know that DHCP

has to be switched on in Livebox, and it is dishing up addresses, and that

DHCP has to be, (and is), switched off in WAG354G, ...so that is acts as a

dumb router.

.....anyhooo, BiiiiG thanks for the tip :-)

Re: LAN disable - stops responding

....just checked Dads' Pc in the house and it's WMP54G is connecting to

Livebox via WAG354's wifi normally !

....after Googling and doing some more reading up on Upnp I'm wondering if

it's that which was responsible for my never ever being able to get my

IcyBox IB-351UE-BL working on firewire. e.g. the "serverless" IP address

negotiation etc. never happened. I even bought a 4xUSB 2.0 + 2xfirewire

port PCI card, and indeed the two 1394a network ports show up as working

okay in Device manager but, ...."firewire" external hd never worked, had to

stick to the USB plug-hole !!!
