jocky1951 Posted May 29, 2011 Posted May 29, 2011 Hi , Windows XP PROFESSIONAL , DELL INSPIRON 8200 I recently had the Proplus.msi problem , which stopped MS Windows XP Professional FrontPage and prevented me opening EXCEL. I had no MICROSOFT CD so I used Office XP Error 1706 - ProPlus.Msi Fix (Line 171) from kellys-korner-xp.com . It solved the problem as I can access and use excel. Everything else seems to be working normally However since the fix I now have my desktop covered with about 80 uninvited icons . I can delete some of them to the recylce bin However the next time i start up they appear again .About half of them do not delete at all. (There is no problem with other any icons I have voluntarily added myself .I can delete them and they disappear permanently Some examples of the uninvited icons startmenusubfolders(a VBScript Script File) taskbariconsincreaseundo ( shows as a firefox icon) webscr ( shows as a firefox icon) winhelp32 Copy of vps(firefox document) SPBlockerTools (Win32 Cabinet Self-Extractor, appication file) StartupTracker3 (Compressed (zipped) Folder) xp_c.htm#cleanup (HTM#CLEANUP File) sortordermenu ( Registration Entries File) etc etc In their Properties they all report they were created on 3 april 2011 , the date I put in the Proplus fix. For security IEI have Microsoft Security Essentials and AVG and neither have reported a problem Any advice regarding how I can get these icons from off my desk top? is there an underlying problem ? Any advice grarefully received . Many thanks Jocky1951 Quote
RandyL Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 I have Microsoft Security Essentials and AVG You should never have two real time antivirus programs running at the same time. This can cause issues. It might be that is part of the problem. I would get rid of AVG then try deleting the icons from safemode. Quote We are all members helping other members. jocky1951 Posted June 5, 2011 Author Posted June 5, 2011 Hi Ken B Many thanks for your suggestion I reduced the number from 4 to2 and that got rid of most of them. . However I still have 11 uninvited items left. For example wallpaperviewswithatag taskbariconincreaseundo helpandsupportrename undo When I try to delete these ones I am told " cannot delete the file-cannot read from the soruce file or disk". In their properties theyb are classified as "file " with 0 bytes. I would be really nice to get rid of these ones as well as . Quote
KenB Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 (edited) Hi, Strange - setting the value to 2 makes the selection more sensitive - I would have expected a value of approx 10 to do the trick. However ....if it worked for you :) If you have problems with the setting producing duplicates try changing them to 10. Select Delete and locate the file(s) you wish to delete. The software will attempt to remove the file on rebooting.
