Hi, my computer crashed at the weekend and gave me error message Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: windows\system32\config\system. To repair insert disc and press 'r' at the first screen to start recovery. I have used the XP disc and re-booted the pc. This brings up the same message again, I've tried pressing 'R' as soon as the pc boots up or after this message.

I've gone into the bios menu but unsure of what to do from here. It seems the pc is reading from the hard drive and not picking up the cd drive. Could you advise if there is anything I can try as I haven't backed up for a while and don't want to lose all my data. I've printed off the helpguide from microsoft website which gives details of how to recover using the XP Disc but as the disc doesn't seem to be reading this isn't working.

Many thanks

In the BIOS there is a setting for changing the boot order. You need to make the CD/DVD drive the first boot device. Then follow the instructions to Save and Exit. Later when you're all fixed up you can change it back if you wish to do so.

Hi, I've managed to re-install windows changing over to CD Rom drive in BIOS. However I am now getting an error message microsoft windows error signature BCP Code:1000000a BCP1: 000000E8 BCP2: 0000002 BCP3: 0000001 BCP4: 80702A16 OSVER: 5_1_2600 SP: 2_0 Product: 768_1

I haven't lost any data on the pc, having problems connecting to the internet but I should be able to sort this out. Not sure if this is a genuine error, I will try doing a restore to before it went wrong.

Many thanks

Since you can get into Windows now I suggest to backup documents etc. Also favorites, address book etc.

If you do need to do a reinstall do you have the original XP disks? Any full XP disk will have the recovery console but do you have the original disks just in case.
