Not sure if this is the correct forum to post this under. Please keep me right if I am wrong.

Previously I had only used my desktop PC with an ethernet cable connected to my router but had to move my PC upstairs. I installed a TP-link Wireless USB adapter a few days ago to make it wireless and it was working brilliantly.

Yesterday I installed Win 7 SP1 and IE9 (I previously had IE8) via Windows update and now cannot connect to the internet. I have Win 7 32-bit.

I am typing this on my laptop, which has no problem connecting to the Internet wirelessly via the same router that the desktop previously connect to via ethernet cable, so canot attach a screen shot. However the new USB adapter connection for my desktop PC status shows that IPv4 and IPv6 Connectivity are both 'Not Connected'. The Media State is 'Enabled'. The desktop PC wireless connection to my router downstairs says it has 'Limited Access', i.e.it will not connect. I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting it, uninstalling & reinstalling it without success.

When I went in to Device Manager I saw an Error Code 39 for six Network Adapters that I didn't even know I had (all Microsoft - 6to4 Adapter, 6to4 Adapter #2, ISATAP Adapter, ISATAP Adapter #2, Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface & WAN Miniport (IKEv2)). This said that they were corrupted. I tried to update them from the PC but they were unable to reinstall correctly and I just got the same error code. I then did a restore to roll back to before Windows update but this made no difference. I then uninstalled five of the drivers under Device Manager Network Adapters. However WAN Miniport IKEv2 refuses to uninstall and I no further forwarding to connecting to the internet from my desktop PC.

Please help me!

I recommend you uninstall all network drivers and reinstall them....

Code 39

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Cause

There are several causes of Code 39 errors:

  • A required device driver is missing.
  • A required binary file is corrupted.
  • There is a problem with the file I/O process.
  • A driver that is referencing an entry point in another binary file is unable to load.

Recommended resolution

Reinstall the drivers for this device.

Uninstall and reinstall the driver

Uninstall the driver from Device Manager, and then scan for new hardware to install the driver again.

You may be prompted to provide the path of the driver. Windows may have the driver built-in, or may still have the driver files installed from the last time that you set up the device. However, sometimes, it will open the New Hardware Wizard which may ask for the driver. If you are asked for the driver and you do not have it, you can try to download the latest driver from the hardware vendor’s Web site.

  1. On the device Properties dialog box, click the Driver tab, and then click Uninstall. Follow the instructions.
  2. Restart your computer.
  3. Open Device Manager, click Action, and then click Scan for hardware changes. Follow the instructions.

You should of uninstalled SP1 and IE9 not done a restore.....

Try this:

Thanks Jellybean. As I said in my original post, even although I go through the motions one refuses to uninstall.

I have already tried uninstalling & reinstalling my new device but this doesn't solve the problem. I have a disc containing the driver so installation is very simple - plug in & run disc. It had worked fine with IE9. However I only had the problem when the system rebooted after SP1 was downloaded.

I have also tried reconnecting my desktop PC with an ethernet cable but was unable to connect.

I don't know what I was thinking of doing a restore. With the benefit of hindsight I know I should just have uninstalled SP1, doh! :o Also I did not turn off my AV first. I didn't realised I had to. and wasn't prompted to do so.

I am sending this from my sister's laptop. Once I get home I will download the piriform application onto a USB on my own laptop, then upload to my desktop PC.

I have also discovered another problem. The DHCP Client won't start even although this is set to start automatically. When I click on 'Start' I receive a msg -

"Windows could not start the DHCP Client Service on Local Computer. Error 1168: Element not found."

Are you able to offer any insight into this, in relation to the rest of my issues?

At the end of the day I think things are so bad that I will have to reinstall Windows, but don't want to if I can avoid it so any further advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Just a couple bits of information here.

It seems that when installing SP1 for Windows 7 that it deletes all prior restore points making it impossible to remove SP1 via System Restore.

If you did a System Restore in normal mode you can always undo the latest system restore.

Not much help I know.
