Guest brett.theriault Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 I have just gotten a new setup, and when I went to uninstall the various Asus utilities that came with, I started getting a problem on boot. services.exe can't run, because it's missing MSVCP60.dll. Can't boot to anything, even safe mode shows the error and then a blank screen. That computer is running XP Pro, and to try and replace the file, I took out the hard drive, hooked it up to this computer (running XP Home), downloaded the DLL file from the internet, and tried to replace it in my system32 folder. Only problem is, everytime I try to boot from the affected hard drive, it seems to have deleted the newly replaced MSVCP60.dll. I hadn't done a backup in a while, and I reallllly would like to avoid a format.

Your machine might be infected with a virus or with malware. I would restore the file once more, then boot into Safe Mode and run msconfig.exe to examine the various startup tasks.

I also ran a scan of the HD when it was connected to the other PC. I had used the same HD of my old PC with the new setup, uninstalled all previous drivers, and then reinstalled drivers for the new hardware. The system worked up until the point where I uninstalled the Asus utilities, specifically "SmartDoctor" and "GamerOSD", because SmartDoctor had been crashing my pc on startup (this is documented elsewhere, it's a conflict with my video card, solved by removing SmartDoctor.) I also found someone with the same problem on another forum , but the solutions offered seem to be basically the same thing i'm trying. So I doubt it's a virus issue. And as I said, I can't even boot to Safe Mode. My main problem is that even though I did replace the file in the System32 folder (and it stayed there), as soon as I try to boot from that hard drive (even into safe mode) it appears to have been deleted again.

Looks like MSVCP60.DLL is a C++ library file. It is not part of the normal Windows installation and is put there by the installation of something else that includes a C++ program. I'm guessing that an install procedure deletes any existing rendition of that file in anticipation of installing its own version - then forgets to install it! Or an uninstall process removes the file even though it's needed by another application. You might try adding the file back and setting the following attributes: Read only System Hidden And I really mean it If that doesn't work, go over the sequence of installs/uninstalls to divine the culprit.
