"Apple Software Update" dialog box in XP

I have XP and I occasionally get the Apple Software Update dialog

box. The last time it happened, it was after I'd closed my browser.

Why does it happen?

Did you play the Apple commercial on the it? Maybe the machine doesn't

want to be a PC anymore.

I just discovered in Add/Remove Programs, there is a program called

Apple Software Updater. I'm not sure if there's any harm in removing

it. I'm not sure if I even need it.

I have Itunes and Quicktime and they are the latest versions.

I went into Itunes, Edit>Preferences and unchecked "Check for updates

automatically." Is that enough to stop the Apple Software Updater

program from showing up?

The date and time was 6/25/2008 8:41 PM, and on a whim, Richard Fangnail

Hi Richard,

 

Yes, that's enough. Apple thought it would add the Updater and install

whatever it wants on user machines. That's how it was able to install

Safari on thousands (if not millions) of machines, most of whom didn't

even know it. Isn't it enough to be hounded by iTunes for new versions?

Now we have the "Updater" to update ALL the Apple programs. How

convenient!
