Hello,

I have been receiving the "out of frequency" error message with my

Windows XP Pro PC - any ideas why and what to do?

Cheers,

Geoff

Read the manual for your monitor. Then select a screen resolution that

your monitor supports. Also check the refresh rate configured for the

monitor (Display Properties, Settings, Advanced, Monitor).

If it is an LCD monitor, note that using any screen resolution other

than the monitor's native resolution will result in fuzziness due to

interpolation.

The only problem is that if the graphics output is causing an Out of

Frequency error on the monitor, there is therefore no display so how can you

change the refresh rate?

Safe mode is usually a low enough resolution and refresh rate for the

monitor to handle.

I don't remember if Safe Mode always boots into standard VGA mode

(640x480 @ 60Hz). The OP could boot into Recovery Console mode (either

because he installed it to have as a selection on bootup or by using the

install CD) and edit the boot.ini file to add /basevideo as a parameter

on the line that loads Windows XP. That makes Windows use the standard

VGA driver for GUI-mode operations.

Note that "I have been receiving" the out-of-frequency error message on

the monitor does NOT mean it happens all the time. From the OP's

description, it is not possible to tell if this is an all-time,

rare-time, or oft-time problem.

For all we know, the OP may not have even connected the monitor up to

the video card's output connector (no cable connected, bad cable, not

push all the way on). Or maybe he connected to the wrong port on the

video card. Or he wants to use the DVI output of the video card but has

the monitor configured to use the VGA input, or visa versa.

Geoff MULTI-posted in microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware. Over there

he thinks he found a solution but no one here will see it because he

did not CROSS-post. No point in wasting time here in this DISCONNECTED

copy of his same post trying to resolve what he solved in his same post

in the other group.

That's your monitor telling you that it cannot handle the output of the

computer's video adapter.

Boot into VGA Mode or Safe Mode and then set the display

(resolution, refresh rate, and/or number of colors) to something that

your monitor can handle. Consult its manual to determine acceptable

settings. Reboot one more time, into Normal Mode.

My apologies for the mult-posting - actually I found the different

groups one at a times and ought to have found all before posting.

It seems that by upgrading the video card drivers the problem has gone

away. Why it suddenly appeared I do not understand.

Cheers

No apologies necessary. Don't listen to the net cop. Glad you got it fixed.
