Guest Vinnie Boombots Posted June 26, 2008 Posted June 26, 2008 My laptop drive has many bad block so it will not boot up. I installed a new hard drive with XP and connected the old drive via USB adapter. I can see the old drive fine. How can I transfer user files / profiles easily WITHOUT using FAST since I cannot boot up with the original drive to run FAST? Is there another utility that will transfer the information from a user folder mounted on another drive? Thank you.

You're probably going to have to manually copy the files from your old HD to your new XP installation. You can expect to have to take ownership of some of your old files and folders. Take a look at these articles for more info. "Access is Denied" Error Message When You Try to Open a Folder http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810881 How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421 Note: If you are running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, you must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an account that has Administrative rights to have access to the Security tab. To start in Safe Mode, reboot your computer and start tapping the F8 key as soon as you see anything displayed on the screen. Keep hitting F8 until the Advanced Startup Options menu appears. Use the up and down arrow keys on your keyboard to select Safe Mode. Hit Enter. Good luck Nepatsfan

I am aware I could just copy or drag items over but was hoping another utility would do this for me and keep the settings, file links, permissions, etc whatever is needed to just log into the old account. Thanx "Nepatsfan" wrote: > "Vinnie Boombots" <VinnieBoombots@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message > news:E1903A19-7259-412A-9C43-839AA44A3D77@microsoft.com... > > My laptop drive has many bad block so it will not boot up.
