D-DayDan Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 I've just built a new computer from scratch and I've got up to the drivers screen for the hard drive. The drivers came with the motherboard and the floppy seems to work, then nothing bad happens, no error messages as if it has installed them. It then takes me back to the original screen yet still no hard drive. I'm using a Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H rev 1.4 and the hard drive is a Samsung SpinPoint F1 750GB SATA-II set to AHCI. I have no idea what to do now :S Quote
KenB Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 Hi and welcome to ExTS Have you managed to install the O/S ? floppy seems to work You have a new build with a floppy drive ? Does the drive show up in the BIOS ? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test
D-DayDan Posted June 8, 2011 Author Posted June 8, 2011 Hi thanks for replying :). I have a floppy drive because I've exhausted any other format I can think of. I've tried a USB flash drive and cd rom, all have the same result. Basically when I try to load the driver it comes up, I select it, it makes a few noises which definitely include the HDD itself. I can't install the OS because it isn't detecting the HDD at all even after all the attempts with the drivers. Where would I find the HDD in BIOS? Quote
KenB Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 (edited) Hi, All BIOS systems are different. You are looking for "Auto Detect" with reference to drives. This needs to be enabled. Also look for Enable SATA or Use Serial ATA or similar. http://www.support-pcs.co.uk/tutorials/images/tut_bios/tut_bios.tweak1.jpg You should also be able to see the drive listed. http://219.142.122.173/userfiles/image/2_EN-Phoenix%20BIOS.jpg Edited June 8, 2011 by KenB Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! D-DayDan Posted June 8, 2011 Author Posted June 8, 2011 I'll have a look for similar options. I don't think the BIOS I have is very user friendly :S. Quote
D-DayDan Posted June 8, 2011 Author Posted June 8, 2011 well I got it to detect the drives as native IDE but when I went to install windows it brought up this blue screen: c0000021a {fatal System error} and another code. It's catch 22 now, I either get blue screen with the drive detected or some way through the installation process with no drive detection :S. Quote
KenB Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Hi, Can you take the drive out and slave it to another system? If so you should be able to format it from there and run a manufacturers diagnostic on the drive to check it out. D-DayDan Posted June 9, 2011 Author Posted June 9, 2011 Unfortunately the new system I've got is the only one I have with sata. I tried to use different jumper configurations which seemed to knacker it up more. Is there any way to do it by putting in my old hard drive or wiping it clean on the new build? Quote
D-DayDan Posted June 9, 2011 Author Posted June 9, 2011 OK, I sort of got it working a minute ago but now it has stopped working and won't detect again. This is a long one :P. I started the hard drive in native IDE mode which detected it in the bios and basically kept making it restart every time I got a blue screen or message that said some files were corrupt until it got to the windows 7 installation screen. Here I chose the repair function then used command prompt. I typed "diskpart" then "lis vol", it showed up the HDD. I then typed "sel vol X" then "clean" and it wiped the drive I guess. This was a success and windows detected the hard drive in that mode so I restarted and went back into bios to sset the hard drive to start as AHCI and began the installation again. Windows 7 detected the drive and allowed me to install windows on it. However, when it came to expanding the files in the installation process it crashed at around 11% with an error message. So I tried a second time and on this occasion it got all the way to completing the installation, then blue screened and restarted the computer. It started up in Windows normal mode but when it came to services set up it just said I had to restart and re-install. I booted from the cd rom again and the Hard drive was detected but couldn't be written to for some reason. So I went to clean it in the same way I did before through command prompt, but it doesn't detect it in "diskpart" even when the bios hard drive settings are set to the native IDE one which found it before. It is still detected in the BIOS on native IDE mode, but this is really baffling me. Quote
D-DayDan Posted June 9, 2011 Author Posted June 9, 2011 Tomorrow I'm going to work hard on fixing this but if anyone has any suggestions for me I'd be happy to hear them :). I'm keeping notes so after I've eventually fixed it I'll make some form of guide for people who may have a similar problem. Quote
KenB Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Hi, The manual for your m/board is here: http://download.gigabyte.eu/FileList/Manual/mb_manual_ga-880gm-ud2h(us2h)_v1.4_e.pdf Have a look at page 77 On Chip Sata Controller must be enabled. RandyL Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 I started the hard drive in native IDE mode Why? The drive is SATA not IDE. On the off chance you want to test the drive here is a link. http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/support/downloads/support_in_es.html Quote We are all members helping other members. D-DayDan Posted June 9, 2011 Author Posted June 9, 2011 For some reason it was the only way to get the drive detected initially. Thanks for the link :). Quote
D-DayDan Posted June 10, 2011 Author Posted June 10, 2011 Thanks for the help guys I finally got it installed. Basically I set the BIOS to SATA like I had done so many times before and it detected the hard drive :S. Now I'm having blue screens left right and centre mainly PFN list corrupted and memory management or something like that. They show up so quickly that I don't have enough time to write them down fully. I think I still have a fair old way to go before I make this system stable. Quote
KenB Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 You have the OS installed ? Can you boot up in Safe Mode and stay stable ? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! MiniToolBoxNetwork TestWireless Test

KenB Posted June 10, 2011 Posted June 10, 2011 I have heard of RAM causing some problems - but not that particular one :) Congratulations on finding the cause. Thanks for the feedback - I am sure somebody else will find this useful. Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!
