Do I need CALs for service accounts?

Recommended Posts

We have some mail and scan to folder enabled printers on my network.

For best functionality they need to have a network login in with which

to authenticate to the domain.

These "users" show up in my licensing server as unlicensed users. I am

uncertain if these accounts should require CALs or not.

My vendor account rep can't seem to give me a straight answer.

Do these "service users" require CALs? and if not how can I get them

out of my license reporting to make the books look correct?

Any answers?

Yes, these devices need coverage by a CAL as they are authenticating. Your

choices are;

Device CAL - for use by anyone.

USER CAL - When only one set of credentials would be supplied.

If the device is used only by people who are already covered by a user CAL

and using their credentials, then no additional CAL would be required.

Always best to have MS licensing give direct and authoritative answers

though.

Kj,

I am pretty sure this is not accurate or our SBS servers would have

complained long ago. The server runs some 90+ services with logins, half

them an administrator account. W only have 25 CALs installed and mostly,

around 20-22 connected users, not counting the administrator also

usually logged on. We only get messages about approaching the user limit

when logged on users approach the appropriate number.

The issue is that these are devices connecting to the server. So I

think that KJ is correct. However it seems unfair that you should need

a CAL to get your scanner working properly. I guess that would be a

PER DEVICE license.
