Win 2003 File and Print services stops responding

Having a issue with a Win 2003 R2 server, Server is a DC, Exchange 2003,

DNS, DHCP and File and Print server.

Issue started about 2 weeks ago users will not be able to get to any shared

folders or print. Exchange is still up and running with out a problem so the

network card is not the issue. TCP/IP TOE is disabled. I've even completly

disabled Symanted Endpoint Protection. But still having the issue.

Nothing shows up in application or system logs.

So far the only thing I have found is to do a reboot of the server to get it

back up and running.

Hello Scott,

What do you mean with "get to any shared folders or print"? Have you mapped

them with scripts or do you mean browsing with network neighbourhood? Please

describe more detailed about the problems you have.

Best regards

We currently have Shared folders on the server and shared Network printers on

this server. People will be printing with out problems and access files

stored on this server and then they will get a error printer not available or

try to browse out to a network share on this server in Windows explorer will

hang and then time out as drive not available.

OS is a Mirrored drive and Data files are on a RAID 5 array.

Hello Scott,

Can you access shares with \\servername\sharename without problems? Please

post an unedited ipconfig /all from server and problem client.

Best regards

When the problem occurs they can not access the files stored on

\\wolf2\public

Wolf2 ipconfig

DHCP enabled: No

IP 10.10.10.5

subnet 255.255.255.0

dg: 10.10.10.1

DNS: 10.10.10.5

All client computers have the issue, they are a mix of WinXP and Vista

Business. When the problem occurs even when on the server itself I can get

to the files going through the local drives (d:\public)but not when going

through the \\wolf2\public.

Remote desktop still works on the server when the issue occurs.

Re: Win 2003 File and Print services stops responding

Has this been resolved? We are having a similar issue. Windows 2003

R2 x64 server. Patched to latest. Server is ONLY file server.

Symantec End Point (Custom Install - AV option only). Ultravnc for

remote control @ console level. IBM blade server. Attached to

DS4800. Broadcom teamed nics. Static IP address. Server install is

pretty much right out of the box with mentioned prgs.

Network shares become unavailable sporadically. Only way (so far) to

resolve is to reboot the server. Event log look clean. Prior to the

"lockup" last entry in system evt log was:

Event Type: Information

Event Source: Service Control Manager

Event Category: None

Event ID: 7035

Date: 8/25/2008

Time: 9:35:39 PM

User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM

Computer: {SERVERNAME REMOVED}

I disabled WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service this morning in an

effort to solve. During time of issue, the server is 100%

operational. Issue occurred around 9:30 PM where it was

inaccessible. It is not a DNS issue. Server is pingable via name.

Server also pingable via ip address. File shares are not accessible

via \\ipaddress or \\servername. Everything at the console level

works. Backups even ran and were 100% successful with no files in use

(because no on was able to access the server via network shares. :)

Any thoughts?

Re: Win 2003 File and Print services stops responding

This solved if for us. We updated NAV per:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948732

Even when NAV was disabled, we still had the server's fileshare stop

responding. After upgrade, we were fine even with everything

enabled.
