Guest John A Hansen Posted June 27, 2008 Posted June 27, 2008 Dear All: I downloaded and installed the Windows XP Service Pack 3 this morning on a HP M7690Y with 4 gig of ram. OS is windows XP Media Center Installation completed fine and went to reboot. Machine hangs up at the logo sign and won't proceed to the start-up. Machine will come up in safe mode just fine and all systems' seem to go OK. Reboot into "last known configuration" also hangs up at the logo Any hints and suggestions are highly appreciated. Best Regards John A Hansen

Guest samdogmom Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 RE: Windows XP SP 3 Issues Is there any chance you have an external hard drive connected via firewire? If so--see this: http://forums.microsoft.com/technet/showpost.aspx?postid=3324346&siteid=17&sb=0&d=1&at=7&ft=11&tf=0&pageid=2 I had the same problem. The only way to get my system to boot was to turn off the hard drive--force quit and then reboot with the hard drive turned off. I exchanged the sbp2port.sys file per recommendations in this thread and now my computer boots normally again with the external firewire hard drive turned on. -- A concerned...but avid Windows user. I fight with my Mac using son every day! (Sometimes I wonder why I try so hard!?!) Microsoft...please help me out...at least once! I''d be so honored! Guest samdogmom Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 RE: Windows XP SP 3 Issues sorry the link I posted doesn't take you to the issue page. I'm copying and pasting the needed information because I can't get the link to post correctly: "I may have found a solution that worked for me. After upgrading to XP sp3 my computer would not boot with my external firewire drive plugged in. So, after reading through countless forums and knowledge bases I found the answer on Western digitals site. The problem comes from sbp2port.sys, You have to revert to an older version(5.1.2600.2180). I found this version in the uninstall directory on my C drive. Just replace this version with the version SP3 installed and everything works now. I can restart my computer now with my firewire drive plugged in. I did this a few days ago and every thing seems to be working fine. Good luck" "First, thanks a lot to Fantom7684, he found an easy way to fix it, at least for me and lots of people ;-) As he wrote, the right SP2 release of the sbp2port.sys file is 5.1.2600.2180 (European Standard date = 03/08/2004 22:59 - American Standard date = 08/03/2004 10:59 PM) In fact, I just replaced the SP3 release of sbp2port.sys file with the previous SP2 release where the file "might be used" (in other words, not in "NtServicePackUninstall" or "ServicePackFiles\i386" folders). For me, this means I replaced it only in two folders: %SystemRoot%\system32\dllcache %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers You can found the good old SP2 release of that file in following folders: %SystemRoot%\$NtServicePackUninstall$ (if you installed Service Pack 3 over a Service Pack 2 release) %SystemRoot%\Driver Cache\i386\sp2.cab (if you installed SP2 in the past)" -- A concerned...but avid Windows user.
