I have a Toshiba laptop and if it has been off for a while, the monitor will stay on for a few hours. After that time the monitor goes black. If I press the little button at the top right (the one that the monitor presses when the laptop closes to let the computer know that it is closed) the monitor will come on for a second or two and then go black again. Can anyone tell me why my laptop is doing this and how I can fix it? Is it possible that the back lights are going out? If so then why does the monitor come back on when I press that button or if the laptop has been off for a while? Thank you.

Hi and welcome to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help,

this does sound like a backlight problem and could be the inverter at fault. If you are able to replace it yourself it can be done and is not too difficult, but does involve some experience in disassembly. There is a very helpful laptop repair site, so rather than me try to explain, have a look at 101 Laptop repairs, here on this page=

If however you are not confident in doing the replacement yourself, then I am afraid it will have to go to a laptop repair specialist to be done.

Nev.
