What are the pros and cons for placing image on removable hard disk?

I use acronis to backup and recover the system and partitions, but sometimes

I found that the image has been corrupted in one of the partitions. Now I

placed the images on one dynamic hard disk. Acronis told me that I could not

recover these images unless I use the rescue bootable media.

and What are the pros and cons for placing images of backup on dynamic hard

disk?

When you say 'dynamic hard disk' do you mean external hard disk (connected

via USB or 1394 etc), or a Windows dynamic disk partition?

You need to find out why.

WHY would you do that? Isn't that a LOT less reliable?

I think you're asking for trouble (using any dynamic disk). (I'm assuming

here you are NOT talking about something like an external USB drive, but

really mean "dynamic").

If you do mean dymanic disk, it cannot be accessed if your XP (must be pro

version) is corrupted. So you'd better put your image on a basic disk.

yes. what I meant is external hard disk.

But the Acronis told me that I could use rescue media to get access to the

image.

I use Acronis TI all the time with a USB external hard drive, and without

problems. Your biggest problem is figuring out WHY your previous images

were corrupt. If they were corrupt on that hard drive, what make you think

it's going to be any different with an external drive, UNLESS your HD is

failing??? Makes no sense.

Re: What are the pros and cons for placing image on removable hard disk?

Thanks, Bill.

I don't know the exact reason. But I think that could be caused by the

previous disk distribution operation. I used Acronis Disk Suite to resize

some partitions.

And, another question is how you recovered the image with ACRONIS TI from

USB external hard disk? Did you use the backed up bootable rescue media to

boot the system first? ACRONIS poped up a window which said that "you should

use rescue media if you want to recover from the image that was stored on

external dynamic hard disk.

I've done it both ways: using the boot CD (which works if you can't boot up

into Windows), but more often in Windows (which is a bit easier - I run the

TI restore program (after launching TI), and it will reboot, when required,

and finish up down there (at the pre-windows level).

Re: What are the pros and cons for placing image on removable hard disk?

It doesn't matter where you put the Acronis backup image, as long as it

doesn't get corrupted and you, or Acronis, can access it when it is needed.

Wherever you put it, when you need to recover from it, you need to use

Acronis bootable media to boot up the system if your Windows cannot boot up.

If your Windows can boot up then you can access the image by running Acronis

from within Windows and don't need a rescue media.

I think you need to figure out why your previous images got corrupted,

because the image file gets corrupted, then other files can got corrupted

too.

Re: What are the pros and cons for placing image on removable hard disk?

Thanks. Juli

Because I placed that image on a separated partition, there was only that

one file on it. so I didn't know what was wrong. Could the re-size operation

cause that corruption?

Re: What are the pros and cons for placing image on removable hard disk?

It shouldn't but can be possiblely the cause. You can make a test by trying

resizing the partition again. Of course you keep a safe copy first.
