Guest Peter Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 When I look at "C:\Documents and Settings\User" in Windows Explorer on my desktop PC I cannot see the "Local Settings" Sub-directory. If I type the name in the address bar it appears OK. I have selected "Show Hidden Files and folders". I have unticked "Hide protected operating system files". If I view the drive from my laptop via my wireless link the files are there! I'm on XP Pro SP2. I'd be grateful for any ideas, whilst I can clearly work around the problem it's a pain. Peter

Guest Gerry Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 Re: Missing files in Windows Explorer Peter Your User Account is only one of a number which has a Local Settings sub-folder. Administator, Default User, Local Service and Network Service, have their own Local settings sub-folders. All Users does not have a Local Settings sub-folder. Does this match the situation on your own computer? What is the situation if you create a new User Account? I am thinking you may have a corrupt User Profile? -- Hope this helps. If one goes to Control Panel > Folder Options > View, then the settings are system-wide. On the other hand, if in Windows Explorer, one goes to Tools > Folder Options > View, one is given the *option* of making the settings apply to "this folder" or to "All Folders." The OP didn't say where he was making the settings, and in my experience, people who are trying to change the way Windows Explorer behaves are more likely to use Tools > Folder Options than the Control Panel. YMMV. On the other hand, your speculation that the OP has a corrupt user profile doesn't seem warranted. The OP said that he *can* see the "Local Settings" folder under C:\Documents and Settings\user\ but only if he enters the path in the the Windows Explorer location bar or uses Windows Explorer on another (networked) computer. The directory is there, it just is behaving as if it's hidden (which it is) despite his efforts to "show hidden files and folders." If the OP is still following this thread, and if he hasn't already figured out what's going on, he could remove the "hidden" attribute for his "Local Settings" folder by using the attrib command from a command prompt window and see if this makes the folder visible in Windows Explorer. -- Lem -- MS-MVP To the moon and back with 2K words of RAM and 36K words of ROM. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_Guidance_Computer http://history.nasa.gov/afj/compessay.htm
