Mutant Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 Hi, I have just finished installing a new Motherboard and cpu, but when I powered it up I am getting nothing but beeping. I checked the Manual and it is indicating that no VGA was detected. These are the components: MB: ASUS P5N72-T Premium CPU: Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q6600GO HD: 160GB Samsung S166 SATA GPU: NVIDIA® GeForce® 9500 GT 1GB RAM: Integral 2GB DDR2-800 DIMM PSU: Storm 500W It was working fine in the old MB. Ive tried the card in the two other pci slots, still no luck. Also cleared the cmos via jumper and have taken the battery out for 30 minutes. Any ideas? Thanks Quote
Wolf Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 Hello Mutant Welcome to FPCH Can you remember the sequence of beeps and do you know what make of bios you have? Quote
Mutant Posted June 17, 2011 Author Posted June 17, 2011 Hi wolf, Thanks for the quick reply. I think the make of the bios is SST (well thats what it says on the chip). It starts of with 1 extended beep followed by 3 smaller ones. Quote
Wolf Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 If you have an AMI (American Megatrends) bios then it's a memory issue mate, have you made sure the memory is securely seated? Quote
Mutant Posted June 17, 2011 Author Posted June 17, 2011 Yeah, its secure. Ive even tried seating it in other slots. How can know exactly what Bios I have If I cant even boot it up to check? Would it be in the manual? I have it here: http://static.highspeedbackbone.net/pdf/e3853_p5n72-t_premium.pdf Quote
Wolf Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 Ok you have a Phoenix/Award bios and and it could be either a memory issue or the card. Have a look at this under Award. http://www.biosflash.com/e/bios-beeps.htm Do you have an option to use integrated graphics? Quote
Mutant Posted June 17, 2011 Author Posted June 17, 2011 Yeah, just as I thought. Hmmm, no I don't think it comes with integrated graphics. http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_775/P5N72T_Premium/#specifications I don't think I have any other card to test, plenty of APGs but no pci cards. I have some other DDR2 memory I could test but It has something like 400mhz, I doubt it would work on this board as I think it requires a minimum of 667mhz. Quote
KenB Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 I don't think it comes with integrated graphics. I had a look at your m/b specs and I don't think you have onboard video either. Try taking the RAM out - clean the contacts with a pencil eraser - and try them just one at a time ( in each slot ). Obviously, if it boots up on one module this is OK and the other is faulty ( assuming you just have 2 ). Mutant Posted June 18, 2011 Author Posted June 18, 2011 I did all what you said, swapped everything around and cleaned everything. This time i'm only getting one fast beep, then nothing. The manual told me that one short beep is indecateing that the keyboard is not being detected. That cant be right as ive tested two keyboards and they light up and I am able to use capslock. What should I do now? I am really confused now, I have no idea whats wrong. Quote
Mutant Posted June 18, 2011 Author Posted June 18, 2011 Great news, It turns out that the problem was down to a faulty VGA cable. Replaced it with another and everything seems to be working well. Only one problem is left now, I just cant seem to boot my new windows xp from the CD. Just keeps trying loading the old os from left in the hard drive that worked with the previous Motherboard. It actually gets as far as wanting me to activate it. Would that work? I read that its unlikely to get it to work at all, or would be very unstable due to compatibility issues with the new MB. But if it were possible it would save me time to re-transfer all my old files back. I have the activation code but no CD. If not then I need to find out why my current xp disk will not boot up. Quote
Wolf Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 You need to go into the bios and change the boot sequence to cdrom as first boot option Mutant. Once you have then pop the XP disk in and then Save the changes, usually by pressing F10. When you see the message "Press any key to boot from cd" do so only once as it will show that message again on subsequent reboots. PRESS NOTHING but simply let it install. Make sure you delete any instances of windows that are found before installing. Quote
KenB Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 Pokin' my nose in here :) But if it were possible it would save me time to re-transfer all my old files back. With XP it is possible to do a Repair Installation. This would keep your files and data intact and address the "problem" of the new motherboard. I am a bit confused. You mention booting from the XP CD and then you say this: I have the activation code but no CD. You do have a full retail version of XP ? Mutant Posted June 18, 2011 Author Posted June 18, 2011 Yes, it is the 1st boot device. Its is listed as the Primary IDE Slave. When I bought the pc with it came without an XP Disk, and only have the activation key for it. I thought that I would need to find xp on a disk so I would be able to re-install it with the new Motherboard. I found an old XP home disk that came with one of my previous machines, ive tested it on an older pc that has xp pro. It successfully booted from the bios. So I don't understand why its not booting on my build pc. It doesn't seem to be the original CD as its just a white disk that says XP HOME AUTO in black writing, but it seems to be genuine. Would it be possible to do a repair installation with this disk? Quote
Wolf Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 I'd venture to say that the copy of XP that you have is not the real thing and your best option would be to get either an unbranded OEM or Retail version of XP and install that. Quote
KenB Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 In addition to what Wolf has said .... Your OS detail ( under your forum name ) says XP Pro. You wouldn't be able to do a Repair Install with an XP Home disk. If you have Pro on the system you need a Pro disk to do the Repair Install. Mutant Posted June 18, 2011 Author Posted June 18, 2011 Ah ok. but what I dont get is why I was able to boot this xp home disk on my old dell but not on this one. Could it not be booting because I have xp pro already installed? Or maybe something is not connected right/wrong bios setting? I just don't have the time or money to be buying a new xp disk. But It looks like I might not have a choice. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 Hi, reading back, the hard drive has come from a different computer so already has an operating system on it. At the present moment I think you are trying to instal XP home but again from a once used disk, or in the worst scenario a recovery disk from another computer. If it is only a recovery disk it won't install XP on any thing other than the original computer the disk was made for. The question now is the operating system that is already on the hard drive and the fact it gets as far as asking for activation. That is puzzling as normally XP or later systems will refuse to get that far when presented with a new and different mother board. The only way usually is a repair, which needs the disk for that level of system, in this case XP Professional. So the explanation may be that the new motherboard is not that different to the original board, in that case I suggest trying going further and see if it will activate. Failing that and if you cannot afford a new legal disk, you could try installing Ubuntu which is a free to use operating system, for at least until you can afford a new disk. Nev. Mutant Posted June 18, 2011 Author Posted June 18, 2011 Well, amazingly it actually works! I was able to activate windows over the phone and so far so good, no stability problems. Its just like how it was before the new mb and cpu. Just need to reactivate some programs and it seems ill be set. Didn't need to transfer my files after all. The only thing that ive noticed wrong is that the cpu is only running at 1.6ghz not 2.4 and that the ram is only running at 400mhz not 800. But apart from that everything is running smoothly. Temperatures are low with the cpu running at only 29 degrees. I still cant believe this is working without any issues what so ever. My old mb was an asrock 4coreDuelVISTA with an pentium D 805. I just want to say thanks to you all for the very helpful fast responses. Ill be sure to check back here in the future. Quote
Plastic Nev Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 Firstly, I am glad all works, however the speed problem with the CPU and the RAM, I will leave that for someone who knows more about it. It does need attention though as it will slow things down. It may be the motherboard itself not able to support those speeds, or hopefully something simpler. Nev.
