sighthound Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 (edited) Amongst the many updates I receive automatically on my computer I get security updates for Microsoft Windows and they are now preventing me accessing the internet. The only way I can access the net is to keep deleting the new updates and restarting the computer. Any help please? Not sure if it’s relevant but I use Internet Explorer 8 (that I would like to stick with). Edited June 18, 2011 by sighthound Quote
Wolf Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 That obviously should not be happening. What error messages are you getting and what Firewall do you use? Quote
sighthound Posted June 18, 2011 Author Posted June 18, 2011 The computer states there is no problem with internet connection but no pages are showing. Not sure about Firewall but I have Norton installed. That said I have just clicked on the Norton icon and nothing is opening? Quote
Wolf Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 Have you tried going back to a restore point to before this started happening? Quote
Wolf Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 Go to Start/ All Programs/ Accessories and then System Tools, you'll find System Restore in there. Quote
sighthound Posted June 18, 2011 Author Posted June 18, 2011 Useful to know that me thinks. Just restored computer to settings on 05 May (earliest point on list that came up). Will now get rid of Norton as that does not seem to be working correctly and will replace with Microsoft Essentials that I am told is good? Quote
Wolf Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 Well it's not bad mate but I use Avast and if you absolutely want to keep IE then that's your choice but I prefer Firefox. Can you now access the Net? Quote
sighthound Posted June 18, 2011 Author Posted June 18, 2011 Everythink OK at the moment but will have to see what happens when updates are intalled on the computer. Quote
Wolf Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 Ok, please let us know how you go on Sighthound. Quote
sighthound Posted June 18, 2011 Author Posted June 18, 2011 Cannot get rid of Norton! I have clicked to uninstall it on 'Uninstall or change a program' page and a box comes up seeking permission to continue. I click to continue and nothing happens. Quote
Wolf Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 Have a read of this Sighthound. http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080710133834EN&ln=en_US Quote

Wolf Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 Thanks Sighthound and you're more than welcome mate. Do you have any form of anti malware protection as well? Quote
sighthound Posted June 18, 2011 Author Posted June 18, 2011 I have just downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials and I have feeling all will be well now. Fingers crossed. Quote
Wolf Posted June 18, 2011 Posted June 18, 2011 As mentioned earlier mate let us know what happens when you have downloaded the updates. Quote
